“For this cause…having heard…” The writer links what he is about to say to what came just before: because of those earlier-described realities, he responds in a particular way. He also signals that his motivation includes what he has heard about the readers, implying news has reached him about their situation.
“the faith in the Lord Jesus… and the love… toward all the saints” Two features of the readers are highlighted. First is their trust and loyalty centered on the Lord Jesus. Second is their love directed broadly, not selectively: it reaches “all the saints,” meaning the whole group of God’s people.
“don’t cease to give thanks… making mention in my prayers” The writer describes a continuing practice. He keeps giving thanks for them, and he keeps naming them in prayer. Thanksgiving and intercession are intertwined: remembering them before God is expressed as gratitude and ongoing prayerful mention.
Literary Context
These lines come right after a long opening section that celebrates what God has done and planned “in Christ” (1:3–14). The writer now turns from describing these blessings to describing his response: thanksgiving and prayer. Verses 15–16 function like a bridge into the longer prayer that follows (1:17–23), where he will ask that they gain deeper understanding and strengthened perspective. The logic is simple: hearing encouraging news about them leads him to sustained gratitude and continued prayer on their behalf.
Historical Context
Ephesians is commonly dated to around the early 60s AD, when the early Jesus-movement had formed networks of communities across the eastern Mediterranean. Communication depended on travel, visitors, and letters, so “having heard” suggests information arriving through messengers rather than direct observation. These gatherings were socially mixed and spread across cities and households, where loyalty to a crucified-and-exalted Lord could create tensions with local expectations and civic religion. In that setting, reports of steady allegiance and community-wide care would be notable and worth sustained encouragement.
Theological Significance
Ephesians 1:15–16 presents the writer’s ongoing response to good reports about the recipients. He has “heard” about two visible marks of their life together: their faith “in the Lord Jesus” and their love “toward all the saints.” On the basis of this news (and tied to what he has just celebrated in 1:3–14), he describes a settled pattern: he keeps for them and keeps bringing them up in his prayers.

Some also hear “faith in the Lord Jesus” mainly as inward trust, while others think it includes loyalty/allegiance that shows up publicly. The wording can carry both ideas, and the surrounding emphasis on community life makes the public dimension hard to ignore.
Finally, “all the saints” is taken by some as all believers everywhere, and by others as all the believers connected to their community network (including groups they may not naturally favor). Either way, the stress falls on non-selective love.
Why the disagreement exists The phrases are brief and can be read with different “reference points.” “For this cause” could look backward to 1:3–14 or forward to the report; “faith” can be heard as trust or allegiance depending on how one thinks early Christian communities used the word; and “all the saints” can be heard as universal or more local depending on how broadly one imagines the audience.
What this passage clearly contributes These verses show that the writer treats faith in Jesus and love toward God’s people as reportable realities, not merely private feelings. They also show a model of pastoral concern at a distance: hearing about people’s faith and love leads not to flattery alone but to sustained gratitude directed to God and continued prayerful remembrance of them (preparing for the requests of 1:17–23, e.g., Ephesians 1:17).
