1:17Meaning
The giver and the gift The prayer is directed to “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,” also called “the Father of glory.” The request is that God would “give” them a “spirit of wisdom and revelation” so they may have a fuller, relational “knowledge of him.”
Unit 2 (v. 18a): Inner perception needs light
The writer uses a picture: the “eyes” belonging to their “hearts” need to be “enlightened.” The point is not physical sight but inward understanding that becomes clear and bright rather than dim or confused.
Unit 3 (v. 18b): Knowing the hope and the inheritance
Two “what” questions define what enlightened understanding should grasp. First, they should know the hope that comes with God’s calling. Second, they should recognize “the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints”—language that highlights great value and honor connected with what God calls “his inheritance” located “in/among” his people.
