Question 1

In verse 19, what contrasts does Paul use to describe the readers’ change in status?

Accepted Answer

Paul frames the change with two paired contrasts. Negatively, they are “no longer strangers and sojourners,” meaning they are not outsiders with limited standing or temporary residence. Positively, they are now “fellow citizens with the saints” (a public, belonging-and-rights image) and “of the household of God” (a family membership image). The shift is not just from distant to near, but from not-belonging to full membership. The two images together emphasize both recognized standing and close relational inclusion.

Question 2

How does the citizenship image differ from the household image in what it communicates?

Accepted Answer

Citizenship language highlights recognized belonging in a community with shared identity and standing—people are “fellow citizens,” not guests. Household language moves closer and warmer: it pictures shared life under one head, with shared identity as a family unit. In the passage, Paul uses both to intensify the same point: inclusion is not partial. The readers are not merely tolerated in the community; they belong in a stable, defined way, and that belonging is described as connected to God himself (“household of God”).

Question 3

What is the relationship between “foundation,” “cornerstone,” and “building” in verses 20–21?

Accepted Answer

Paul shifts to a construction picture: the community is like a building under construction. The “foundation of the apostles and prophets” describes the base layer that supports the structure—likely the original witness and message that established the community. Christ Jesus is then named the “chief cornerstone,” the crucial stone that anchors and aligns the whole structure. Verse 21 adds that the whole building is being “fitted together” and “grows,” implying coordinated unity and ongoing formation. The images work together: foundation supports, cornerstone aligns, building grows as one.

Question 4

What does the repeated phrase “in whom” (vv. 21–22) contribute to the meaning?

Accepted Answer

The repetition ties the entire building project to Christ. In verse 21, “in whom” introduces how the whole building holds together and grows into a holy temple “in the Lord.” In verse 22, “in whom” introduces the readers’ participation: “you also are built together.” The effect is to make Christ not just an ingredient but the sphere and center of the community’s unity and growth. The shared structure is not simply a human coalition; its coherence and direction are described as dependent on being “in” Christ.

Question 5

What does “holy temple in the Lord” mean in this passage, based on the building metaphor?

Accepted Answer

Within the metaphor, “holy temple” describes the purpose and character of the growing structure. “Holy” signals that the end goal is a community set apart for God. “Temple” signals that the community is meant to be a place of God’s presence, not merely a social club or civic association. The phrase “in the Lord” anchors that temple identity in Christ’s lordship—its defining center and orientation. Even if the language is metaphorical, it is a strong claim about what the united community is becoming in relation to God.

Question 6

How does verse 22 develop the temple idea with the phrase “a habitation of God in the Spirit”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 restates the temple theme in more direct terms: the community is being built “for a habitation of God.” That clarifies what “temple” is pointing to—God dwelling among his people. The added phrase “in the Spirit” specifies the mode of God’s presence. The focus is not on a single geographic shrine but on God’s presence with a united people through the Spirit. The wording also keeps the process dynamic: they are “being built together,” emphasizing corporate formation and shared participation in the same dwelling.

Question 7

What clues in the passage suggest that unity across former divisions is central to Paul’s point here?

Accepted Answer

Several details highlight shared inclusion. The readers are called “fellow citizens,” which implies equal standing with an existing people. They are “of the household of God,” not attached at the edge. The building is “the whole building,” not separate structures, and it is “fitted together,” suggesting integration of different parts. The readers are addressed directly—“you also are built together”—connecting their identity to others in the same structure. These features summarize the earlier chapter movement (2:11–18) toward one joined community with shared access to God.
