Ephesians was likely written around the early 60s AD, when the Jesus-movement had spread across major Roman cities and included both Jews and non-Jews. In Roman civic life, citizenship and household membership were powerful markers of status and protection, while “temple” language evoked the central place of sacred buildings in city identity and public life. In places like Ephesus, monumental temples and civic architecture shaped people’s imagination for stability, honor, and communal pride. Against that backdrop, Paul uses familiar social and building images to describe a new, shared community identity that crosses earlier ethnic and social boundaries.

Why the disagreement exists The wording is brief and image-heavy. Terms like “saints” and “prophets” can point in more than one direction depending on how closely a reader ties the passage to Israel’s story and to the earliest church’s leadership roles. Also, “temple” language naturally invites comparison to earlier Scripture and to real temples in the Roman world, raising the question of how far Paul intends the comparison to go.
