Literary Context
This unit sits inside a larger call to live differently because of a new identity and community life (Ephesians 4–6). Just before it, Paul urges his readers to imitate God, to walk in love, and to avoid being partners with darkness (5:1–2). Immediately after, he continues the contrast between darkness and light and tells them to live as “children of light,” discerning what pleases the Lord (5:8–10). So 5:3–7 functions as a concrete set of lines: which behaviors and even which kinds of speech do not fit the community, and why they must not be excused.
Historical Context
Ephesians addresses believers living in major Greco-Roman cities (with Ephesus as the letter’s traditional focal point), where public religion, trade, entertainment, and social bonding often involved sexual permissiveness, coarse humor, and status-driven acquisition. In that setting, gatherings and meals could easily include talk that treated sexual exploits or sharp-edged joking as normal. Paul writes in the early Roman Empire (c. AD 60–62), when small house-based communities needed clear boundaries to avoid being absorbed by common social patterns and to resist persuasive voices that downplayed the moral stakes of everyday choices.
Theological Significance
Ephesians 5:3–7 draws lines around both actions and the kind of speech that can make those actions seem normal. The text explicitly names sexual immorality, “uncleanness,” and covetousness as out of place “among” people described as saints. It then adds a second boundary: forms of talk (filthy speech, foolish talk, and joking) that are “not appropriate.” In contrast, it explicitly points to “giving of thanks” as the fitting alternative.

Why the disagreement exists The disagreements come from how absolute-sounding phrases function in moral teaching (“not even be mentioned”), from the overlap between sexual sin lists and greed language in ancient moral catalogs, and from the way “inheritance” can point both to future receiving and to present belonging.
