vv. 8–10 — Identity and conduct
The readers were once characterized by darkness but are now “light in the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8). Therefore they must “walk” accordingly, producing the “fruit” associated with light—goodness, righteousness, and truth (Ephesians 5:9). They are to test and learn what pleases the Lord (Ephesians 5:10).
vv. 11–12 — Non-participation and exposure
They must not شریک in “unfruitful works of darkness,” but rather expose them (Ephesians 5:11). The verb exposed signals bringing wrongdoing to light. The rationale is social disgrace: certain deeds done “in secret” are shameful even to describe (Ephesians 5:12).
vv. 13–14 — Light reveals; a call to wakefulness
What is exposed becomes visible by the light, and the text adds a generalizing claim about what is revealed becoming light (Ephesians 5:13). A quoted line then calls sleepers to wake and rise, with Christ shining upon them (Ephesians 5:14).
