Question 1

What actions do Esther and Mordecai take in verse 29, and how is their authority described?

Accepted Answer

Verse 29 says Esther (identified as “the daughter of Abihail”) and Mordecai “wrote with all authority” to confirm “this second letter of Purim.” The explicit actions are writing and confirming, and the explicit description is that their writing carries full backing rather than being informal advice. The verse also names both leaders, which suggests the confirmation is strengthened by shared endorsement (royal position plus Mordecai’s recognized leadership among the Jews). The focus is not on new events happening, but on stabilizing the meaning and practice of Purim through an authoritative document.

Question 2

In verse 30, what is the scope of the letters, and what tone do they claim to have?

Accepted Answer

The scope is empire-wide: letters go “to all the Jews” in “the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus.” That matches the book’s larger picture of a dispersed Jewish population living under Persian administration. The letters are characterized as having “words of peace and truth.” Explicitly, that phrase presents the content as reassuring (“peace”) and dependable (“truth”), not as coercive propaganda. The verse emphasizes communication and unity: people spread across many provinces are being coordinated by the same message about shared observance.

Question 3

What does it mean in verse 31 that Purim is confirmed “in their appointed times”?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “appointed times” highlights that Purim is tied to specific, recurring dates rather than being left to local preference or occasional remembrance. Verse 31 connects this timing to prior instruction: it is “according as Mordecai… and Esther… had enjoined them.” It also says the people “had ordained for themselves and for their seed,” which implies a multi-generation commitment. So the confirmation concerns a regularized calendar practice with continuity—one that can be observed consistently by a scattered community because the dates and expectations are clearly defined.

Question 4

How does verse 31 connect Purim with “fastings and their cry,” and what does that suggest about the festival’s memory?

Accepted Answer

Verse 31 explicitly links the confirmation of Purim to “the matter of the fastings and their cry.” Even though earlier parts of the chapter emphasize feasting and gifts, this line brings back the emotional and religious memory of danger, grief, and urgent pleading. The text does not explain the schedule or details of the fasting here, but it does show that Purim’s remembrance is not only celebratory; it also keeps the community’s distress in view. The festival holds together reversal (deliverance) and the memory of what preceded it (lament and fasting).

Question 5

What relationship does verse 31 describe between leadership instruction and community self-commitment?

Accepted Answer

Verse 31 presents two strands that reinforce each other. On the one hand, the practice is confirmed “according as Mordecai… and Esther… had enjoined them,” stressing leadership direction with recognized authority. On the other hand, it is also “as they had ordained for themselves and for their seed,” emphasizing voluntary communal adoption that extends to descendants. The verse suggests that Purim’s durability depends on both: authoritative confirmation from leaders and internal acceptance by the community. The text frames the festival as something the people own, not merely something imposed from above.

Question 6

In verse 32, what does “The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim” add to the picture?

Accepted Answer

Verse 32 narrows the focus to Esther’s command as the decisive confirming force: “The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim.” Even though verse 29 highlighted Esther and Mordecai together, this line emphasizes Esther’s royal weight in finalizing the arrangement. Then it adds a preservation step: “it was written in the book.” Explicitly, the verse shows the festival’s terms being made durable through formal confirmation and recording. The narrative is closing by underlining permanence—Purim is not only remembered; it is officially закрепed in a written record.

Question 7

What are the main repeated ideas across verses 29–32, and how do they work together?

Accepted Answer

Across the unit, the repeated ideas are confirmation, writing, authority, and fixed timing. Verse 29 stresses authoritative writing to confirm a second letter; verse 30 stresses wide distribution and a trustworthy tone (“peace and truth”); verse 31 stresses appointed times and continuity to descendants, including remembrance of “fastings and their cry”; verse 32 stresses Esther’s confirming command and archival recording. Together, these elements show a movement from crisis memory to structured tradition: the community’s story is secured through leadership endorsement, empire-wide communication, calendar regularity, and written preservation.
