9:20-22Meaning
Letters, dates, and the shape of the celebration Mordecai writes an account and sends letters to all Jews throughout the king’s provinces. The letters direct them to keep the 14th and 15th of Adar every year. The reason given is experiential and communal: these were the days when they got rest from enemies and when a whole month’s meaning “turned” from sorrow and mourning into gladness. The observance is described with three actions: feasting and joy, sending portions of food to one another, and giving gifts to the poor.
