Question 1

What does Moses ask from Jethro in v.18, and how does Jethro respond?

Accepted Answer

Moses asks for permission to leave Midian and travel to Egypt. He frames his request as a return to “my brothers who are in Egypt,” with the purpose of checking whether they are still alive. Jethro’s response is brief and supportive: he tells Moses to “go in peace.” In the narrative, this functions as a clear release from Moses’ obligations in Jethro’s household and removes potential conflict or delay. The text emphasizes that Moses does not simply depart unannounced; he leaves with relational permission and a peaceful send-off.

Question 2

In v.18, what might Moses mean by “my brothers,” based on the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “my brothers” can be read at more than one level. It could refer to Moses’ close kin (extended family ties back in Egypt), since Moses grew up among Israelites and still has blood relatives there. It can also refer more broadly to his fellow Hebrews/Israelites—the enslaved community he belongs to by birth and identity. The passage itself does not define the scope, but the wider storyline has Moses returning to engage the plight of Israel in Egypt, which supports the broader sense. At minimum, it signals solidarity and relationship, not tourism or diplomacy.

Question 3

How does v.19 relate to Moses’ earlier reason for leaving Egypt (Exodus 2)?

Accepted Answer

Exodus 2 presents Moses fleeing because his killing of an Egyptian became known and Pharaoh sought his life. In v.19, Yahweh directly addresses that earlier threat: “all the men who sought your life are dead.” This statement removes the specific danger tied to Moses’ past as a fugitive. The text does not claim that Egypt is now harmless; later events show serious opposition. But it does indicate that the original pursuers connected to Moses’ flight are no longer able to carry out the revenge or prosecution that once forced him into exile.

Question 4

What is the relationship between Moses’ request to Jethro (v.18) and Yahweh’s command (v.19)?

Accepted Answer

The sequence shows two kinds of authorization operating together. First, Moses seeks leave from his household authority in Midian (Jethro), and he receives a peaceful release. Then Yahweh speaks to Moses in Midian, repeating and reinforcing the direction to return to Egypt, adding new information about the death of the pursuers. The narrative does not present Jethro’s permission as the source of the mission; Yahweh’s word is. But it does present Moses as acting responsibly within human relationships while carrying out the divine commission.

Question 5

What does v.20 emphasize by mentioning Moses’ wife, sons, and the donkey?

Accepted Answer

By stating that Moses took his wife and sons and set them on a donkey, the text highlights that this is not a solitary trip. It is a household movement, suggesting more than a quick visit, even if Moses’ request to Jethro was phrased as checking on relatives. The donkey detail gives a realistic picture of travel and signals that Moses is transporting dependents, not just traveling light. It also underlines the cost and seriousness of returning to Egypt: Moses is bringing his family into a journey that is tied to a demanding public mission.

Question 6

Why does the passage end by noting that Moses took “God’s rod” in his hand (v.20)?

Accepted Answer

The closing line draws attention to an object associated with Moses’ commission. Earlier in the call narrative, Moses’ staff becomes a sign in God’s communication with him. Here it is explicitly called “God’s rod,” which marks Moses’ journey as empowered and authorized by Yahweh, not merely self-initiated. The staff is also practical: it will function in the confrontation narrative that follows as a visible instrument connected with signs. Ending the unit with the rod shifts focus from travel logistics to the purpose and authority behind the trip.

Question 7

What explicit reasons does the text give for Moses returning to Egypt, and how do they differ?

Accepted Answer

The passage gives two stated reasons in two voices. Moses tells Jethro he wants to return to his brothers in Egypt and see whether they are still alive—language centered on family/community welfare and reconnection. Yahweh tells Moses to return because the men who sought his life are dead—language centered on removing the barrier of past danger and confirming that the time is right to go back. The text does not say Moses’ reason is false; it simply records it as his explanation to Jethro, while Yahweh provides mission-focused reassurance.
