Question 1

What does Yahweh instruct Moses to do “before Pharaoh,” and what does that imply about the purpose of the wonders?

Accepted Answer

In v.21 Yahweh tells Moses to do “before Pharaoh” all the wonders placed “in your hand.” The phrasing implies the wonders are not private experiences but public demonstrations meant to confront Pharaoh directly. They function as enacted proof that Moses is speaking for Yahweh and that Yahweh has power that can challenge Pharaoh’s authority. The passage itself does not list the wonders here; it focuses on their role in the encounter. The wonders are part of the message, not separate from it: Pharaoh is to see Yahweh’s power while hearing Yahweh’s demand.

Question 2

How does the passage present the reason Pharaoh will not let the people go?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 places Pharaoh’s refusal inside a foreknown and divinely stated outcome: Yahweh says, “I will harden his heart,” and then states the result, “and he will not let the people go.” Later, v.23 also describes Pharaoh as refusing to let Israel go. Taken together, the passage presents Pharaoh’s resistance as both expected and connected to Yahweh’s hardening, while still describing Pharaoh’s stance as a real refusal. The text does not explain how these fit together; it simply states both elements as part of the coming conflict.

Question 3

What is the content and force of the declaration “Israel is my son, my firstborn” (v.22)?

Accepted Answer

In v.22 Moses is instructed to deliver a formal message: “Thus says Yahweh, Israel is my son, my firstborn.” The claim defines Israel’s identity in relationship to Yahweh using family language. Calling Israel “firstborn” elevates Israel’s status and signals that mistreating Israel is not just political oppression but an offense against Yahweh’s own household claim. The force of the line in context is not sentimental only; it sets up the logic of v.23, where the threat against Pharaoh’s firstborn mirrors Pharaoh’s refusal to release Yahweh’s firstborn.

Question 4

In v.23, what is Yahweh demanding, and what is the stated purpose of that demand?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 reports Yahweh’s demand in direct terms: “Let my son go, that he may serve me.” The demand is release (“let go”) and the purpose is service to Yahweh. In context, “serve” contrasts with Israel’s current situation of serving under Pharaoh’s control; it marks a transfer of allegiance and belonging. The passage does not spell out the full details of what that service will look like (worship, festival, covenant life, or all of these). But it clearly ties liberation to Israel’s identity as Yahweh’s son and to Yahweh’s right to Israel’s service.

Question 5

How does v.23 describe Pharaoh’s response, and how does that shape the warning that follows?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 frames Pharaoh’s response as refusal: “you have refused to let him go.” That refusal is treated as direct defiance of Yahweh’s stated demand. The warning that follows is shaped to match the family-language stakes: “Behold, I will kill your son, your firstborn.” The symmetry is deliberate within the verse: refusal to release Yahweh’s “son/firstborn” leads to the threatened loss of Pharaoh’s “son/firstborn.” The passage presents this as a serious escalation, not merely a prediction of general trouble but a targeted warning tied to the earlier “firstborn” declaration.

Question 6

What connections does the passage make between identity (son/firstborn), authority (Pharaoh), and conflict (wonders/hardening)?

Accepted Answer

The passage links three strands into a single conflict preview. First, Moses will perform wonders before Pharaoh, putting Yahweh’s power on display in a contest of authority (v.21). Second, Yahweh states that Pharaoh’s heart will be hardened, leading to continued refusal (v.21). Third, the verbal message frames Israel as Yahweh’s son and firstborn, making Pharaoh’s control of Israel a direct challenge to Yahweh’s paternal claim (vv.22–23). The conflict is therefore not only about labor or migration; it is about who has the right to command Israel’s service and about the consequences of rejecting Yahweh’s demand.
