Question 1

How does the passage connect Moses’ actions and Yahweh’s actions, and what does that imply about agency in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

The passage links a human gesture to divine action in a tight sequence: Yahweh gives the instruction, Moses stretches out his hand and rod toward the sky, and then Yahweh “sends” the storm. The text does not treat Moses as generating the hail; instead, Moses’ act functions as the sign-step that accompanies Yahweh’s direct sending of thunder, hail, and lightning. The narrative emphasis stays on Yahweh as the one who controls the event (“Yahweh rained hail”), while Moses is the obedient mediator through whom the announced act is enacted in public view.

Question 2

What kinds of targets are named for the hail, and what picture of devastation does that create?

Accepted Answer

The targets cover living beings and the means of sustaining life: people, animals, field vegetation, and trees. By naming both humans and livestock, the text shows the storm threatens life and labor. By adding “every herb of the field” and “every tree of the field,” it highlights economic and food damage: standing crops are shredded, and trees are broken, which implies longer-term loss beyond the day of the storm. The repeated “all/every” language gives a picture of widespread exposure—whatever is out in the open field is vulnerable.

Question 3

What is the literary effect of describing the hail as unmatched “since it became a nation”?

Accepted Answer

That line functions as an intensifier: the storm is framed as beyond anything Egypt remembers as a political people. Whether taken as a literal span of recorded history or as a rhetorical way of saying “never like this,” the effect is to mark this plague as exceptional. It raises the stakes in the plague sequence by portraying escalating severity and by making the event sound historically incomparable. The claim also reinforces that the story is not describing a routine storm but an extraordinary, story-defining catastrophe.

Question 4

What does verse 26 add to the meaning of verses 22–25?

Accepted Answer

Verse 26 introduces a sharp contrast that reshapes how the whole event is read. Verses 22–25 stress that hail falls “throughout all the land of Egypt” and devastates what is in the field; verse 26 then marks a specific exception—Goshen—where Israel lives, and where there is no hail. This does more than report geography: it signals that the disaster is selective within the narrative. The hail is not portrayed as random or uncontrolled; it is bounded in a way that distinguishes Israel from the rest of Egypt.

Question 5

In what ways does the passage emphasize scope, and what limits are built into that scope?

Accepted Answer

Scope is emphasized through repetition (“all the land,” “throughout,” “all that was in the field,” “every herb,” “every tree”) and by listing multiple categories of targets. At the same time, the passage builds in two notable limits. First, the damage is repeatedly connected to what is “in the field,” implying exposure matters—things under shelter are not the focus. Second, verse 26 limits the storm geographically: Goshen is explicitly outside the plague’s reach. So the scope is broad across Egypt, but it is not limitless or indiscriminate.

Question 6

What details in verses 23–24 shape how the storm is imagined, and what is left undefined?

Accepted Answer

The storm is imagined as a violent, multi-sensory event: thunder sounds, hail falls, and lightning flashes down toward the earth. Verse 24 adds that lightning is “mixed with” the hail, reinforcing the intensity and danger of being outdoors. What is left undefined is the precise physical description of the lightning phenomenon and the mechanics of how it is “mixed.” The text’s purpose is not meteorological explanation but narrative impact: it portrays a terrifying, unprecedented storm attributed directly to Yahweh’s sending.

Question 7

Does the passage explicitly say people or animals died, and how should that affect interpretation?

Accepted Answer

The passage does not explicitly say that people or animals died; it says the hail “struck” those in the field and describes the storm as extremely severe. Because death is not directly stated, readers should distinguish what is asserted from what is inferred. It is reasonable to infer that such a storm could be lethal, especially given the emphasis on severity and the striking of humans and animals. But strictly from these verses, the confirmed claims are widespread impact, damage, and the vulnerability of those caught outdoors, rather than a recorded death count.
