Question 1

What does Pharaoh confess in vv. 27–28, and how does he describe Yahweh compared to himself and his people?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh makes three linked claims. First, he admits wrongdoing: “I have sinned this time,” which treats the current crisis as connected to his own actions. Second, he assigns moral rightness to Yahweh by calling Yahweh “righteous.” Third, he places guilt on his side by calling himself and his people “wicked.” The contrast is direct: Yahweh is in the right; Pharaoh and Egypt are in the wrong. The confession is paired with urgency—he is speaking while the hail and thunder are still threatening.

Question 2

What exactly does Pharaoh ask Moses to do, and what promise does Pharaoh attach to that request (v. 28)?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh asks Moses to pray to Yahweh so that the “mighty thunderings and hail” will stop, saying the storm has been “enough.” The request is not just for advice or a general blessing; it is specifically for intercession addressed to Yahweh. Pharaoh then attaches a concrete political promise: “I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.” In the logic of the narrative, he is offering release in exchange for the removal of the disaster.

Question 3

How does Moses describe the timing and manner of his prayer, and why does he say the storm will stop (v. 29)?

Accepted Answer

Moses gives a specific sequence: he will leave the city first, then “spread abroad” (stretch out) his hands to Yahweh. That physical gesture marks his prayer as deliberate and public rather than private or hidden. Moses also predicts a complete end to the storm—thunder will cease and there will be no more hail. He gives a stated purpose for this outcome: it is meant to produce recognition in Pharaoh that “the earth is Yahweh’s,” linking the stopping of the storm to Yahweh’s rule.

Question 4

What tension is created by Moses’ statement in v. 30 after promising the storm will stop?

Accepted Answer

Moses’ words create a sharp contrast: he can confidently say the storm will end in response to prayer, yet he also says he “knows” Pharaoh and his servants still will not fear Yahweh. That means the miracle of the storm stopping is not presented as proof that Pharaoh will permanently change. The tension is between an immediate, observable result (weather ceasing) and a deeper, lasting response (reverence or submission) that Moses expects will still be missing at this stage.

Question 5

Why does the narrator include the details about flax, barley, wheat, and spelt (vv. 31–32)?

Accepted Answer

The crop report grounds the plague in concrete, measurable damage. It explains that flax and barley were struck because they were at vulnerable stages (barley “in the ear,” flax “in bloom”), while wheat and spelt were not struck because they had not yet grown up. This timing detail shows the disaster is not described as a vague storm but as an event with selective impact tied to the season. It also heightens the narrative stakes: the storm has real economic consequences even as some food supply remains.

Question 6

What actions does v. 33 report, and what immediate change follows?

Accepted Answer

Verse 33 reports Moses carrying out his stated plan: he goes out of the city from Pharaoh and stretches out his hands to Yahweh. The result is described as immediate and comprehensive—thunder and hail cease, and rain is no longer poured on the earth. The verse links Moses’ prayer-action and the weather change tightly, presenting the stopping of the storm as a response to Yahweh invoked by Moses. The three-part description (thunder, hail, rain) emphasizes that the whole storm system ends, not just one element.

Question 7

Across vv. 27–33, what repeated focus on “knowing” or “fearing” Yahweh appears, and how does it shape the episode’s meaning?

Accepted Answer

Two key inner responses are named: “knowing” and “fearing.” Moses says the storm will stop “that you may know that the earth is Yahweh’s” (v. 29), framing the event as a revelation about Yahweh’s authority. Yet Moses also says Pharaoh and his servants will not “yet fear Yahweh God” (v. 30), suggesting that knowledge of Yahweh’s power does not automatically produce the deeper posture of fear/reverence. Together, these statements shape the episode as both disclosure and ongoing conflict: recognition is being forced by events, but resistance remains.
