The coming day of removal God addresses Ezekiel as “son of man” and points to a specific “day” when God will take from the people what gives them confidence and pride: their strength, what they boast in, what they long to see, what their hearts are set on, and even “sons and daughters.” The piling up of phrases emphasizes total loss, not a minor setback.
A survivor arrives with confirmed news God says that “in that day” the one who escapes will come to Ezekiel. The purpose is concrete: the survivor will make Ezekiel “hear it with [his] ears,” meaning the disaster will be reported directly and audibly, not as rumor.
Ezekiel’s mouth opened; a sign and recognition On that same day Ezekiel’s mouth will be opened in relation to the survivor, and he will speak and no longer be mute. His shift from silence to speech is itself a sign to the people. The outcome is that they will recognize the speaker as Yahweh—events plus the prophet’s restored speech press the message home.
Literary Context
These verses close the long judgment section that runs through Ezekiel 4–24 and follow immediately after the sign-act of Ezekiel not mourning his wife (24:15–24). That personal loss was meant to mirror the people’s coming loss of what they love most, including the temple and family security. Verses 25–27 explain how the sign will be “completed” in time: a specific report from a survivor will arrive, and that arrival will trigger Ezekiel’s return to speech. The ending stresses recognition—events and Ezekiel’s changed speech will make the message unmistakable.
Historical Context
Ezekiel is speaking among Judean exiles living under Babylonian control, after earlier deportations but before the final fall of Jerusalem. News traveled slowly between the homeland and displaced communities; major political and military events were often confirmed by messengers or refugees who escaped a defeat. The passage assumes a looming catastrophe in Judah that will strip the nation of security and treasured institutions, producing survivors who flee and carry eyewitness reports. Ezekiel’s role is shaped by this setting: his public speech is timed to match the moment when distant disaster becomes verified reality.
Theological Significance
These verses finish the explanation of Ezekiel’s earlier sign-act (his silence and the non-mourning for his wife). Some readers take “I take from them” as God acting directly against Jerusalem and its people; others read it as God allowing Babylon’s conquest while still taking responsibility for the outcome. Either way, the text’s point is that the catastrophe is not random and that it confirms the prophetic message.
There is also debate about what “their strength” and “the desire of their eyes” most specifically name. Some hear the temple and the city as the main referents; others take the phrases more broadly as everything that gave them security and identity (including family and future).
Some also differ on Ezekiel’s muteness: whether he was entirely silent for a period, or whether he was restricted from ordinary speech but still able to deliver certain messages. Verse 27 clearly marks a decisive, observable change—he “will be no more mute”—whatever the exact limits were before.
Why the disagreement exists The key phrases are intentionally compressed and poetic (“strength,” “joy of their glory,” “desire of their eyes,” “what they set their heart on”), so readers must decide how specific or general they are. Also, the grammar “I take” can be read either as direct action or as God’s sovereign control over events carried out through human armies.
What this passage clearly contributes It connects prophecy to a public, testable timeline: the predicted loss happens, a survivor’s report arrives, and Ezekiel’s speech changes at the right moment. Together these become a “sign,” not mainly by being mysterious, but by making the meaning of the disaster unmistakable.
