Tyre is addressed as a sea-gate trader who boasts Tyre is spoken to directly as one who “dwells at the entry of the sea,” a place defined by access points to maritime travel and trade. She is called “merchant of the peoples to many isles/coasts,” highlighting a wide commercial network. The Lord’s message quotes Tyre’s own self-assessment: “I am perfect in beauty.” The next line places Tyre’s “borders” in the “heart of the seas,” and credits “your builders” with bringing that beauty to completion.

Literary Context
These verses open a long lament over Tyre in Ezekiel 27, within the larger block of speeches against foreign nations (Ezekiel 25–32). The chapter works like a crafted mourning song that describes Tyre’s greatness in order to set up the tragedy of its fall; the beauty is not the final point but the backdrop for loss. The ship image begins here and will carry forward through details of crew, cargo, and eventual wreck. The repeated prophetic formula (“the word came,” “thus says the Lord”) frames the lament as a commanded message, not merely the prophet’s opinion.
Historical Context
Tyre was a major Phoenician port-city whose wealth depended on maritime trade networks linking the Levant with islands and distant coasts. In Ezekiel’s time the region was being reshaped by the Neo-Babylonian Empire’s westward dominance after Assyria’s collapse. As Babylon tightened control over coastal cities and trade routes, Tyre’s strategic harbors and commercial reach made it both influential and vulnerable. Ezekiel speaks from the setting of exile among Judeans under Babylonian power, where news and rumors of sieges and shifting alliances would have made a “lament” over a proud trading hub feel politically plausible and socially pointed.

Tyre is pictured as a sea gateway and a trading hub with wide reach (“many isles/coasts,” v. 3). The text also reports Tyre’s own self-description—“I am perfect in beauty”—and then builds a vivid ship image: the city’s splendor is like a luxury vessel assembled from elite woods, ivory, and costly textiles sourced from many regions (vv. 5–7).
Some differences center on what specific phrases point to in the real world. “Entry of the sea” may be read as Tyre’s harbors and maritime approaches in general, or more specifically as a strategic chokepoint controlling access and traffic (v. 3). Likewise, “many isles/coasts” may be heard as islands in particular, or as a broad way of saying “many distant coastal lands” (v. 3).
Place-names also vary in identification: Senir, Kittim, and Elishah can be mapped to slightly different locations depending on how one correlates biblical names with later geography (vv. 5–7). Finally, “ensign” can be understood as a literal banner/marker or more generally as something conspicuous and signaling status (v. 7).
The poem uses ancient geographic labels and poetic description rather than modern cartography. Some terms can cover a range (island vs. coastlands), and some place-names have more than one plausible historical match.
Explicitly, the text establishes: (1) God authorizes a lament over Tyre (vv. 1–2), (2) Tyre’s identity is tied to maritime trade and wide connections (v. 3), and (3) Tyre’s beauty and greatness are portrayed as expertly “built” and internationally supplied (vv. 4–7).
