Judah and Israel’s exports Judah and the land of Israel are described as regular trading partners. They exchange Tyre’s goods for food and valuable local products: wheat (from Minnith), “confections,” honey, oil, and balm. The picture is of agricultural abundance and specialty produce flowing into Tyre.
Damascus’s luxury goods Damascus is called Tyre’s merchant because Tyre has many crafted products and many kinds of wealth that attract trade. Damascus is said to supply the wine of Helbon and white wool, items that read as premium or desirable in this context.
Mixed partners and practical-to-luxury items Vedan and Javan trade “with yarn” and provide bright iron, cassia, and calamus, combining metalwork materials with fragrant plant products. Dedan trades in “precious cloths for riding,” suggesting high-quality textiles used for mounts or travel gear. Arabia and the princes of Kedar trade in livestock—lambs, rams, and goats—showing another layer of supply that supports urban wealth.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Ezekiel’s lament over Tyre in chapter 27, which portrays the city like a splendid ship whose parts and crew come from many places. Earlier lines describe Tyre’s construction and seafaring reach; then the poem turns into a long catalogue of trading partners and cargoes (27:12–24), emphasizing breadth, variety, and value. Verses 17–24 continue that catalogue and move from nearby Israel and Syria into Arabia and Mesopotamian-linked locales, ending with a concluding snapshot of “choice wares” that sums up the luxury tone before the lament proceeds toward collapse (27:25ff.).
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks from the Babylonian exile in the early sixth century BC, when Babylon dominated the Levant and major coastal cities navigated shifting power and tribute demands. Tyre was a leading Phoenician trading center with maritime connections across the Mediterranean and overland routes into Arabia and Mesopotamia. The list of places in this section reflects known trade corridors: agricultural zones supplying grain and oil; Syrian centers connected to wine and textiles; Arabian groups associated with livestock and aromatics; and inland cities tied to caravan exchange and high-end cloth. The poem uses that world of commerce to portray Tyre’s extensive economic network.

Spices, precious materials, and finished luxury textiles Sheba and Raamah bring the “chief of all spices,” precious stones, and gold. Then a cluster of places—Haran, Canneh, Eden, along with Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad—are again called Tyre’s traffickers, broadening the network toward the east. The unit closes by summarizing the kind of things these traders deal in: “choice wares,” blue and embroidered textiles, and chests of rich clothing tied with cords and made of cedar—storage and packaging that matches the luxury trade being described.
Ezekiel 27:17–24 adds more names and products to the lament over Tyre, portraying the city as a major trade hub. The text explicitly says that many regions acted as Tyre’s traders and lists what they exchanged: food staples and specialty goods from Judah/Israel, luxury wine and wool from Damascus, metals and aromatics from other partners, livestock from Arabian groups, and spices, precious stones, and gold from Sheba/Raamah. The repeated “your merchants/traffickers” language keeps attention on how wide and valuable Tyre’s commercial network is.
The catalogue also places Judah and Israel inside a larger economic web. The point is not mainly to praise these nations; it is to show how many places fed Tyre’s prosperity.
Some differences are about identifying obscure terms and places, and about what a few trade phrases mean.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses place names that are rare or otherwise not securely identified, and several trade terms can be translated in more than one plausible way. Since the poem is a compressed list, it gives little extra context for settling those questions.
What this passage clearly contributes This section strengthens the chapter’s portrayal of Tyre’s wealth as internationally sourced and diverse. It also helps set up the logic of the larger lament: when a city’s splendor depends on an extensive network of trade partners and luxury goods, its collapse will be correspondingly dramatic because so much is bound up with it. The verses contribute concrete detail to that picture by naming partners and “choice wares” (especially textiles and precious goods) that fit the chapter’s luxury tone (Ezekiel 27:17–24).
