A divinely caused, cosmic-scale mourning The Lord says that “in the day” the great figure went down to Sheol, God himself caused mourning. The deep is “covered” for him and the rivers are restrained so that the great waters “are stayed,” as if the world’s life-giving systems pause in grief. Lebanon mourns, and the “trees of the field” faint, extending the funeral beyond human observers to the natural world.
Shock among nations, then underworld consolation God says he made the nations shake at the sound of the fall, like the crash of a massive tree. God “cast him down” to Sheol with those who already descend to “the pit,” placing this fall among the common fate of the dead. Strikingly, the “trees of Eden”—the best, well-watered trees—are “comforted” in the nether parts of the earth, as if earlier great ones find relief or vindication when the dominant power joins them below.

Literary Context
These verses sit inside Ezekiel 31, a taunt-like poem that compares a dominant empire to a towering, well-watered tree in Lebanon that overshadowed others. After describing its height, beauty, and reach, the chapter turns to its sudden cutting down and removal, explaining that its greatness did not prevent collapse. Verses 15–17 focus on the aftermath: creation imagery and international reaction, followed by a scene of descent to the underworld. The passage prepares for the next chapter’s similar funeral imagery for Egypt (Ezekiel 32), keeping the focus on the rise and fall of world powers.
Historical Context
Ezekiel spoke among Judean exiles living under Babylonian control in the early sixth century BC, when the Near East was dominated by shifting empires. Assyria had recently fallen from its former dominance, Egypt still sought influence in the region, and Babylon had become the leading power. Ezekiel’s audience had watched major states collapse and smaller peoples get swept up in imperial struggles. In that setting, Ezekiel 31 uses a grand political metaphor to portray how even the strongest regimes can be brought low, and how their downfall affects allies, subject peoples, and international stability.
Theological Significance
Ezekiel 31:15–17 presents the fall of a world-power in cosmic and underworld imagery. The text explicitly attributes the “mourning” to the Lord: God says he caused it when “he went down to Sheol” (v.15). The passage also explicitly says God “cast him down to Sheol” with others who descend to “the pit” (v.16), and that companions and dependents go down with him (v.17).

The language is deliberately larger-than-life. Rivers are restrained, “great waters” stop, Lebanon mourns, and trees faint (v.15). Nations “shake” at the sound of the fall (v.16). These are not private events; the downfall is pictured as affecting creation and international stability.
Who is the “he”? In the wider chapter, the tree image points to an imperial figure. Some read the “he” here primarily as Assyria’s ruler (a past example used as warning). Others take it as aimed at Egypt (the present target), using Assyria as a model so the “he” functions as an idealized empire-type meant to land on Egypt.
How literal is the creation language? Many understand “deep,” rivers, and waters as poetic ways to describe worldwide shock and the undoing of apparent sources of life and security connected with the empire. Others allow that the poetry is anchored in real events (military collapse and geopolitical upheaval) but still treat the water-and-forest imagery as symbolic rather than reporting physical changes in nature.
What does it mean that the “trees of Eden…were comforted”? Some take “comforted” as grim consolation: earlier great powers in the realm of the dead find a kind of relief or vindication when the newest superpower joins them. Others take it as the leveling effect of death itself—no empire stays above the rest forever, so the “best trees” are “comforted” by the end of the tyrant’s superiority.
Why the disagreement exists The passage stacks metaphors (“trees,” “Lebanon,” “Eden,” “deep,” “pit,” “shadow”) and shifts scenes quickly from earth to the underworld. Because Ezekiel 31 uses a single sustained image for an empire, readers differ on whether each element should be mapped to a specific historical referent (Assyria vs. Egypt) and on how to hear underworld language: as a concrete picture of the dead, or as a poetic stage for political humiliation.
What this passage clearly contributes These verses emphasize that imperial downfall is finally presented as God’s act (“I caused…,” “I made…,” “I cast…,” vv.15–16). They also stress the wide reach of such collapse: creation is portrayed as mourning, nations tremble, and those who relied on the empire (“his arm,” those under his “shadow”) share its descent (v.17). Sheol functions as the scene of humiliation and leveling, where the fallen joins “those who descend to the pit” and is no longer unmatched among the “choice and best” (v.16).
