A peace covenant that removes threats Yahweh says he will make “a covenant of peace” with “them.” As a result, dangerous wild animals will be eliminated from the land, so the people can live securely even in the wilderness and sleep in wooded areas—places that normally symbolize exposure and risk.

Literary Context
These verses sit near the end of Ezekiel 34, where Yahweh criticizes Israel’s failed leaders (“shepherds”) and then promises to personally care for the scattered flock. Just before this, Yahweh describes bringing the sheep back, feeding them well, and judging between animals that harm others within the flock (34:11–24). After promising a new shepherd figure (34:23–24), the passage shifts to what settled life under Yahweh’s care looks like: safety, blessing, and abundance. The logic moves from leadership repair to environmental and political stability.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks to Judeans living through national collapse and exile under Babylonian power in the early 500s BC. War, displacement, and food shortages were common realities, and imperial control meant forced labor and loss of local autonomy. In that setting, talk of “yokes,” predation by “nations,” and land productivity addresses concrete fears: exploitation by stronger powers, insecurity in travel and settlement, and the fragility of agriculture when communities are uprooted. The promised reversal describes restored normal life—safe habitation, dependable seasons, and freedom from external domination.
