Recognition of presence and belonging The verse states a future result: “They shall know” that Yahweh is “with them” as “their God.” This knowledge is not presented as abstract information but as recognition formed by events Yahweh brings about. The second half parallels the first: they will also know that “they, the house of Israel, are my people.” The relationship runs both directions—God with them, and they belonging to him.
Shepherd image restated and clarified Yahweh addresses them directly: “You my sheep, the sheep of my pasture.” This repeats the chapter’s main picture and makes the relationship personal. He also promises a coming “shepherd” from David’s line and a settled condition of safety and provision. Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks to Judeans living under Babylonian control after major deportations from Judah. Jerusalem’s political collapse, the loss of land, and displacement created a crisis of leadership and communal identity. In that setting, “shepherd” language naturally addressed the failure of rulers and the vulnerability of the people. The promise that Yahweh is “with them” and that they are still “the house of Israel” answers the social reality of exile: the community’s future and belonging do not rest on present power, location, or local officials, but on Yahweh’s ongoing commitment and oversight.
Theological Significance
