Literary Context
These verses sit inside an oracle aimed at Mount Seir (Edom), where Ezekiel is told to speak a message of coming devastation (Ezekiel 35:1–9). The passage moves as a direct announcement from the Lord Yahweh: first the target is named, then God’s stance (“I am against you”) is declared, then the action and effects are spelled out (hand stretched out; land and cities reduced to ruin). The closing line gives the intended effect: recognition of Yahweh’s identity and authority.
Historical Context
Ezekiel prophesied from among Judean exiles living under Babylonian control after major deportations and during the period when Judah’s political life was collapsing. In that wider setting, Ezekiel includes messages about neighboring peoples as well as Judah. “Mount Seir” points to the Edom region south and southeast of Judah, a neighbor with a long, tense relationship. The oracle assumes a world where powerful empires reshaped local borders and cities could be depopulated or ruined through warfare, forced movement, or economic collapse.

The passage also fits Ezekiel’s larger pattern: God interprets historical collapse (cities emptied, places ruined) as the outworking of his own authority, not random chance or merely human politics.
One real question is what “Mount Seir” refers to in scope. Some read it mainly as a geographic region that will be physically devastated. Others think the place-name also stands for the people identified with it (Edom as a neighbor and rival), so the judgment is aimed at a community as well as terrain and towns.
A second, smaller difference is how to take “stretch out my hand.” Many read it as vivid, human-like imagery for God’s power to act. Others press it more literally as a direct, extraordinary intervention; either way, the text’s point is that the devastation is attributed to God’s purposeful action.

Also, “hand” language is common metaphor, but readers differ in how tightly they connect metaphor to the manner of divine action.
