A burial place named for Gog God says that “in that day” he will give Gog a burial place in Israel. It is described as a valley “of those who pass through” on the east side of “the sea.” The valley will “stop” passersby—either by obstructing travel or by drawing attention and caution. Gog and his entire multitude are buried there, and the place receives a new name: the Valley of Hamon-gog.
Seven months of burial and public honor Israel spends seven months burying the dead “that they may cleanse the land.” The scope is communal: “all the people of the land” participate. This becomes “a renown” for them in the day God is “glorified,” linking the cleanup and burial to public recognition tied to God’s acted reputation.
A dedicated search-and-bury workforce After the main burial period, the people set apart men with ongoing employment to move through the land. Alongside “those who pass through,” they bury any remains still on the surface in order to cleanse the land. The verse repeats the timeline: after seven months, a more deliberate search begins.
Literary Context
These verses sit within Ezekiel’s larger picture of a defeated invader and the restoration of Israel’s security (Ezekiel 38–39). After the battle scenes and divine declarations of defeat, the focus shifts to the practical consequences on the ground: bodies, bones, and land pollution that must be dealt with. The passage continues a sequence that alternates between God’s announced actions (“I will give…”) and Israel’s responsive actions (burying, searching, cleansing). It also prepares for what follows by showing the defeat is not only military but also publicly memorialized in place-names and communal routines.
Historical Context
Ezekiel addressed a community shaped by war, displacement, and the realities of mass death in the ancient Near East. In that world, leaving corpses unburied brought shame, risked disease, and signaled ongoing disorder, while burial restored social order. Land was also seen as capable of being defiled by bloodshed and death, requiring deliberate actions to make it fit again for ordinary life. Some take it as a real, identifiable spot in or near Israel; others think Ezekiel is intentionally vague or picturing an “imaginary” location to make a theological point about total defeat rather than to provide a map.
What it means that the valley “stops” passersby. Some read it as physical obstruction (the burial site blocks a travel route). Others read it as social/ritual interruption (travelers must halt or detour because the place is a warning sign or a defiling site).
How to read the “seven months.” Some take it as a literal timeframe. Others see it as a rounded, complete period that underscores the scale and thoroughness of the cleanup without demanding calendar precision.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew wording allows more than one natural reading in key phrases (especially about “passersby” and the valley that “stops” them), and the text gives a directional clue (“east of the sea”) without naming the sea. Also, Ezekiel often uses vivid, memorable images and place-names that can function both as geography and as meaning-loaded memorials, leaving room for readers to weigh “map detail” versus “message emphasis.”
