Outer wall and measuring standard A wall surrounds the outside of the temple area. The guide holds a measuring reed that is six cubits long, with each cubit defined as a “cubit and a handbreadth” (a longer-than-common cubit). Using that standard, he measures the wall: its thickness is one reed and its height is one reed.
Approaching the east gate and measuring thresholds and porch The guide leads Ezekiel to the gate facing east and goes up its steps. He measures the first threshold as one reed wide, and then the other threshold as one reed wide. He describes the gate’s internal rooms (“lodges”) and the spaces between them, then measures the threshold near the porch toward the temple. The porch toward the temple is measured, first given as one reed, then further specified by additional measurements.
Layout of lodges, openings, and overall distances The east gate has six lodges total—three on each side—with matching dimensions, and the posts match on both sides. The opening is measured at ten cubits wide, while the gate length is thirteen cubits. A one-cubit border runs in front of the lodges on each side; each lodge is six cubits. Literary Context
These verses sit at the start of Ezekiel’s long vision of a restored temple and its surrounding spaces (Ezekiel 40–48).
