Question 1

What sequence of actions is Ezekiel commanded to do in verses 1–2, and what details show these actions are carefully controlled?

Accepted Answer

Verses 1–2 give a step-by-step sequence: Ezekiel must take a sharp sword, use it like a barber’s razor on his head and beard, then take balances (scales) to weigh the hair and divide it. The careful control shows up in the weighing and the repeated “a third” instructions. The outcomes are also assigned to specific locations or directions: burning in the city’s midst, striking with a sword around it, and scattering to the wind. Even the timing is controlled—burning happens when the “days of the siege” are fulfilled.

Question 2

How do the three “thirds” differ in what happens to them, and how does the text locate each outcome?

Accepted Answer

The first third is burned “in the fire in the midst of the city” once the siege days are completed. The second third is struck “with the sword round about it,” indicating violence around the city area rather than inside. The final third is “scatter[ed] to the wind,” which points to dispersal away from the city. That third also has an added line: God says, “I will draw out a sword after them,” which signals continuing danger even after scattering. Each third is both an action and a place/direction marker.

Question 3

What does the phrase “when the days of the siege are fulfilled” contribute to the meaning of the sign?

Accepted Answer

The phrase ties this hair sign to the siege context already underway in Ezekiel’s enacted messages. It suggests the shaving-and-burning scene is not just about the siege itself but about what follows or accompanies its completion: the population’s fate once siege conditions reach their end. It also frames the burning of one third as something that happens at a defined point in the acted timeline, not randomly. The text does not specify the length of those days here, but it uses the phrase to link the actions to the siege scenario.

Question 4

In verses 3–4, what happens to the “few” hairs, and how does that complicate any simple idea of safety?

Accepted Answer

Ezekiel is told to take “a few in number” from the hair and bind them in his skirts (his clothing). That action sets them apart from the thirds and places them close to the prophet, which can suggest being kept or reserved. But verse 4 immediately complicates this: Ezekiel must take some of those same bound hairs and throw them into the fire to burn them. So even within the small, set-aside group, there is further loss. The sign does not allow a simple reading where the “kept” group is automatically untouched.

Question 5

What is the significance of God’s statement, “I will draw out a sword after them,” in verse 2?

Accepted Answer

That line is attached to the third that is scattered to the wind. Scattering might suggest escape or survival, but the added statement signals that dispersal does not end the threat. The danger “follows” them, meaning the consequences extend beyond the city’s immediate destruction. In the logic of the sign, the sword is not only an event inside or around Jerusalem; it continues as people are driven outward. The text presents ongoing vulnerability for those who end up scattered rather than secure refuge.

Question 6

How does verse 4 expand the scope of the sign’s effect beyond the city, and what does it explicitly claim?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 says that from the burning of some of the bound hairs “a fire” will “come forth into all the house of Israel.” Explicitly, the text claims the effect is not limited to the city scene where hair is burned; it reaches the wider people described as “all the house of Israel.” The verse does not spell out the mechanism, but it uses the image of fire spreading outward to describe a widening impact. In context, the sign pushes readers to see Jerusalem’s catastrophe as having broader national consequences.
