A glorious ornament turned into something filthy The “beauty” or precious ornament was meant to be displayed with honor, yet the people used it to make images connected with things God calls disgusting. Because the prized object has been put to that use, God says he will make it like refuse—something treated as unclean and unwanted.
Handed over to outsiders as plunder God declares he will give “it” into the hands of strangers as prey and to the wicked as spoil. The result is not careful handling but desecration: outsiders will profane what had been set apart.
God turns away; even the hidden place is violated God says he will turn his face away from them, and then “they” will profane his secret place. The picture intensifies: robbers enter and profane it, stressing the collapse of boundaries that once kept the inner, protected area secure.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside a larger announcement that the end is coming upon the land, with disaster unfolding in a way no one can buy off or escape. Earlier in the chapter, Ezekiel describes panic, social breakdown, and the uselessness of silver and gold in the crisis. Verses 20–22 tighten the focus onto what had been prized and protected—especially the sanctuary and its valuables—showing how misuse leads to loss. The argument moves from corruption (they used the ornament for detestable images) to consequence (it becomes unclean, then surrendered to plunder and desecration).
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks as Judah is being squeezed by Babylon’s expansion, with Jerusalem’s leadership caught between revolt and submission. The temple in Jerusalem was the center of national identity and wealth, and conquering armies commonly stripped sanctuaries of precious metals and objects as trophies and revenue. In this setting, Ezekiel presents the coming invasion not only as military defeat but as public humiliation: what Judah prized will not be protected. Outsiders—foreign troops and opportunists—will treat sacred spaces as just another target for looting and violence.
Theological Significance
Ezekiel 7:20–22 links sacred value with moral misuse. Something described as a “beautiful ornament,” originally associated with , gets redirected into making “detestable” idol images. The passage then moves from cause to consequence: because what was prized was used in corrupt worship, God declares it will become like something unclean—treated as trash rather than treasure.

What is “the ornament”? Some read it mainly as the temple’s precious items (gold, vessels, and wealth used or diverted into idol-making). Others take it more broadly as the temple itself (or even Jerusalem as a whole) as the prized “ornament” that becomes defiled and then exposed to outsiders.
What is “my secret place”? Many understand it as the inner sanctuary (the most restricted area), emphasizing total desecration. Others argue it may refer more generally to a protected precinct or hidden store of treasure—still communicating invasion of what should have been secure.
Who are “they” who profane it in v. 22? Some take “they” as the foreign invaders/robbers. Others think the line may include Judah’s own people too—first by polluting the holy things through idolatry (v. 20), and then by the outsiders’ final profanation (vv. 21–22).
Why the disagreement exists The pronouns (“it,” “they,” “them”) are not fully pinned down in English, and the imagery can point both to objects (treasures) and to places (sanctuary/city). Also, “secret place” can be heard either as a specific inner room or as a general way of saying “the most guarded area.”
What this passage clearly contributes The passage explicitly teaches that misuse of what is set apart for God—especially turning sacred wealth/beauty into idolatry—leads to loss, shame, and exposure. The logic is direct: corruption inside leads to plunder and profanation from outside. It also frames foreign invasion as more than geopolitics; it is presented as God allowing outsiders to treat what was holy as common because it has already been polluted.
