Question 1

In v. 20, what two contrasting uses of the “beautiful ornament” are presented?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 sets up a sharp contrast: the ornament was originally “set in majesty” (presented as something honorable and elevated), but it was later used to make images connected with “abominations” and “detestable things.” The verse presents this shift as a misuse of something precious and set apart. The consequence is stated in the same verse: God says he will make it “as an unclean thing,” meaning it will be treated as defiled rather than celebrated. The movement is from honor → corruption → declared uncleanness.

Question 2

How does the passage connect idolatry to the later plundering by outsiders?

Accepted Answer

The passage links the two by a cause-and-result sequence. First, the people turn the ornament into materials for detestable images (v. 20). Then God responds by treating the ornament as unclean (v. 20), which prepares for the next step: he gives it into the hands of strangers and the wicked as prey and spoil (v. 21). The outsiders’ profaning does not appear as random; it is presented as the consequence of prior pollution. What was already spiritually defiled becomes publicly exposed and taken.

Question 3

What does v. 21 emphasize about the outsiders’ relationship to the sacred object/place?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 emphasizes transfer of control and the resulting loss of holiness in practice. God says he will “give it” into the hands of “strangers” and “the wicked of the earth” as plunder. The key outcome is that “they shall profane it.” The verse highlights that outsiders will not treat the object/place with reverence or special boundaries. The language of prey/spoil suggests violence and exploitation, and “profane” indicates the sacred status will be violated and treated as common.

Question 4

What does it mean in v. 22 that God will “turn” his face away?

Accepted Answer

In v. 22, God turning his face away communicates withdrawal of protection and favor in the moment of crisis. The verse does not describe God as the direct actor entering the sanctuary; instead, the next actions are carried out by “they” and by “robbers” who enter and profane the secret place. So the phrase functions as an explanation for why the violation happens: God does not intervene to stop it. Within the chapter’s larger message of unavoidable judgment, it signals abandonment to the consequences of the situation rather than rescue.

Question 5

What details in v. 22 intensify the sense of total collapse compared with v. 21?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 intensifies the picture by moving from general plunder (v. 21) to invasion of what was most protected. It introduces “my secret place,” implying an inner or hidden area that would normally be guarded. It also specifies “robbers” entering it, emphasizing disorder and the breakdown of boundaries. Finally, it repeats “profane” again, reinforcing that the central issue is not only theft but desecration—holy space being violated. The repetition and the focus on the hidden place make the catastrophe feel complete, not partial.

Question 6

Based on vv. 20–22 alone, what are the main candidates for what “it” refers to, and what in the text supports each option?

Accepted Answer

The text allows more than one plausible referent for “it.” One option is temple treasures or precious metals: v. 20 speaks of an ornament used to make images, which fits material wealth being repurposed for idol-making, and v. 21’s prey/spoil language fits portable goods. Another option is the sanctuary/temple complex: v. 21 says it will be profaned, and v. 22 speaks of “my secret place,” which strongly evokes sacred space. A broader option is Jerusalem as the prized “ornament,” with invasion and profanation describing the city’s humiliation.

Question 7

How do the repeated words and ideas (“profane,” “detestable,” “unclean”) shape the passage’s main point?

Accepted Answer

The repeated vocabulary frames the crisis primarily as a holiness problem, not merely a military one. “Detestable” and “abominations” describe what the people made and practiced (v. 20). “Unclean” describes God’s verdict on the ornament after its misuse (v. 20). “Profane” appears in vv. 21 and 22, describing what outsiders (and/or violators) do to what was sacred. Together, the terms create a moral chain: detestable worship produces uncleanness, which leads to profanation by outsiders. The repetition keeps the focus on polluted holiness and its consequences.
