Chain made because violence fills the land The command to “make the chain” introduces restraint and captivity as the fitting response to a place described as overflowing with bloodshed and violence. Foreign takeover and humiliation of strength and sacred space Because of the conditions in v. 23, the speaker says the “worst of the nations” will come and occupy Israel’s houses. The chapter moves from declaring the “end” to describing what that end looks like on the ground: panic, loss of property, social breakdown, and the failure of normal supports. Verses 23–27 function as a closing escalation: the cause is stated (violent crime), the means is named (foreign nations), the experience is pictured (no peace, nonstop bad news), and the collapse of guidance and leadership is emphasized before the concluding recognition formula.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks as Judah is being crushed by the Neo-Babylonian Empire, with parts of the population already deported and Jerusalem’s future increasingly grim. In this setting, “the land” and “the city” point to Judah and Jerusalem, where political instability and internal injustice could intensify fear and violence. Conquest in the ancient Near East commonly involved seizure of houses and property, humiliation of elites, and the desecration or repurposing of temples and shrines. The passage reflects a society facing siege, rumors, and the breakdown of institutions that normally mediated direction and stability.
