Question 1

In Ezra 5:11, how do the builders identify themselves, and why might that be significant in this setting?

Accepted Answer

They identify themselves as “servants of the God of heaven and earth.” In the immediate setting, they are answering a formal inquiry from regional officials about an ongoing construction project. By starting with identity rather than with a political claim, they frame their work as religious service, not rebellion. The title “God of heaven and earth” also communicates broad authority: their God is not merely local. At the same time, it is phrased in a way that could be understood within the Persian imperial world, where such God-language could be intelligible to outsiders.

Question 2

What two claims do the builders make about the “house” they are building (Ezra 5:11)?

Accepted Answer

First, they claim the “house” already existed “many years ago,” meaning the current work is presented as rebuilding or restoring something ancient rather than starting a new institution. Second, they claim that earlier house was built and finished by “a great king of Israel.” Together these points stress continuity: the builders portray themselves as resuming an established sacred project with deep roots in Israel’s past. In the context of an investigation, that continuity can function as a defense: the work is tied to longstanding tradition rather than a new political initiative.

Question 3

What does Ezra 5:12 say caused the earlier disaster, and how is that cause described?

Accepted Answer

The builders say the disaster happened after “our fathers” provoked the God of heaven to anger. The cause is described in general moral and theological terms, not as a specific list of violations. The wording highlights responsibility within the community’s own story: the problem began with their ancestors’ actions toward God. This frames the exile and the temple’s ruin as more than unfortunate geopolitics. Even though a human king and army carried out the destruction, the builders interpret the deeper cause as God’s response to provocation.

Question 4

How does Ezra 5:12 connect God’s action with Nebuchadnezzar’s action?

Accepted Answer

The verse links them in sequence: God “gave them into the hand” of Nebuchadnezzar, and Nebuchadnezzar then destroyed the house and deported the people to Babylon. So the human actions are not denied or minimized; Nebuchadnezzar is explicitly named as the one who wrecked the temple and carried people away. Yet the builders place those events under God’s overarching control by describing the conquest as something God allowed or handed over. The text presents both levels in one explanation: divine handing over and historical invasion.

Question 5

What details does the passage include about the exile, and what details does it leave unstated?

Accepted Answer

It includes the main outcomes: the temple (“this house”) was destroyed, and the people were deported to Babylon. It also names the conqueror: Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, called “the Chaldean.” What it leaves unstated is the length of the exile, the specific route and stages of deportation, and the internal experience of the people in Babylon. It also does not specify which sins provoked God, only that the provocation occurred. The passage is a concise explanation, not a full historical record.

Question 6

How does the builders’ brief history function within their answer to the officials (Ezra 5:11–12)?

Accepted Answer

Their history serves to justify the rebuilding by locating it in a long narrative. They present the temple as ancient and originally completed under a notable Israelite king, which implies legitimacy and continuity. They also acknowledge the earlier collapse and exile, but they explain it as connected to their ancestors’ provocation and God’s handing them over. That combination says, in effect, that the previous destruction was real and accounted for, and that the present project is part of restoration after that loss. In an inquiry, this kind of framing can reduce suspicion by emphasizing restoration rather than innovation.

Question 7

What parts of Ezra 5:11–12 are explicit statements, and what parts require inference when interpreting the passage?

Accepted Answer

Explicit statements include: the builders call themselves servants of the God of heaven and earth; they are building a house built long ago; a great king of Israel built and finished it; their fathers provoked God; God gave them into Nebuchadnezzar’s hand; Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the house and exiled the people. Inferences include: that the builders are choosing language that could be understood in a Persian setting; that their emphasis on continuity is meant to strengthen their legitimacy; and that “house” might mean the broader temple complex, not only a single structure. Those inferences fit the context but are not directly spelled out.
