Question 1

What specific facts do the elders claim about Cyrus’s authorization in Ezra 5:13–16?

Accepted Answer

The elders claim several concrete points: Cyrus issued a decree in his first year as “king of Babylon” to rebuild “this house of God.” Cyrus also recovered the gold and silver temple vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had removed from the Jerusalem temple and placed in a Babylonian temple repository. Cyrus then delivered those vessels to Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor, and instructed him to take the vessels to Jerusalem, put them in the temple there, and see that the house of God be built “in its place.” Finally, they say Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations, but the work remains unfinished.

Question 2

How do the returned vessels function in the elders’ argument, not just as a detail of history?

Accepted Answer

In the elders’ presentation, the vessels are evidence that the rebuilding is officially recognized and materially continuous with the pre-exile temple. Their return shows a reversal of Nebuchadnezzar’s earlier removal and implies a controlled, authorized transfer of valuable sacred property. The chain of custody (Cyrus takes them out; they are delivered to Sheshbazzar) supports the claim that the current builders are not stealing, inventing, or starting an unauthorized shrine. The vessels also connect the rebuilding to the specific Jerusalem site: Sheshbazzar is told to relocate the items to the temple in Jerusalem, alongside rebuilding “in its place.”

Question 3

What does the passage say Sheshbazzar did, and what does it not say?

Accepted Answer

It says Sheshbazzar was appointed governor by Cyrus, received the temple vessels, traveled to Jerusalem, and laid the foundations of the house of God there. It also implies he was the responsible agent for returning the vessels and initiating the building project. However, the passage does not describe Sheshbazzar’s background, how long he served, whether he remained the main leader throughout the project, or how his role relates to later stages of construction. It also does not provide details about the building process beyond the key markers: foundations laid and the project still not completed at the time of the report.

Question 4

What is the significance of rebuilding the house of God “in its place” (v. 15) within this report?

Accepted Answer

“In its place” highlights that the elders are claiming continuity with the original temple site in Jerusalem, not proposing a replacement elsewhere. In a dispute about authorization, location matters: rebuilding at the recognized historic site aligns with the idea of restoration rather than innovation. It also strengthens the claim that the returned vessels belong in that specific sanctuary, tying sacred property to a specific geographic and communal center. Within the logic of the report, this phrase supports the view that the project is not merely a religious preference but an authorized rebuilding of a known institution at an established location, under imperial permission.

Question 5

How does Ezra 5:16 describe the project’s progress, and what questions does that raise about the timeline?

Accepted Answer

Ezra 5:16 credits Sheshbazzar with laying the foundations and then summarizes the period from that time “until now” as a time in which the house “has been in building,” yet “it is not completed.” The statement clearly communicates delay and incompletion at the time Persian officials are investigating. It also raises interpretive questions: Does “has been in building” mean steady construction, or does it mean the project has existed as an ongoing effort with periods of stoppage? The verse itself does not settle that; it functions as a compressed summary meant to explain why the work is active now yet unfinished.

Question 6

Why might the elders emphasize Cyrus’s first year as “king of Babylon” rather than using another title?

Accepted Answer

In their setting, referencing Cyrus as “king of Babylon” frames the decree in terms Persian officials would recognize: it connects the authorization to the moment Babylon changed hands and Cyrus took control of Babylonian administration and its temple treasuries. It also fits the elders’ argument about the vessels, since those items were stored in Babylon and then released. While readers may ask how exactly “first year” is being counted, the elders’ rhetorical aim is clear: to anchor the project in the earliest phase of Persian rule over Babylon, implying that the authorization is foundational and not a recent, questionable innovation.
