Royal order to the treasurers Artaxerxes issues a direct command to “all the treasurers” in the province “Beyond the River.” They must carry out, promptly and carefully, whatever Ezra asks of them. Ezra is identified by office and role—priest and scribe connected to the law of the God of heaven—which frames his requests as authorized, not private.
Stated ceilings and an open item The decree sets upper limits for what may be supplied: up to one hundred talents of silver, and up to one hundred measures/baths of several provisions (wheat, wine, oil).
