Question 1

Who is commanded in these verses, and what are they told to do?

Accepted Answer

The king addresses “all the treasurers…beyond the River,” meaning regional financial officials in the western provinces. They are commanded to carry out whatever Ezra requests “with all diligence,” so the emphasis is speed and careful compliance, not negotiation. Ezra is identified with titles that signal public authority: he is both a priest and a scribe connected to the law of the God of heaven. That identification functions as part of the warrant for why treasurers should treat his requests as legitimate orders flowing from the decree, not as personal favors.

Question 2

What specific resources are listed, and what limits are attached to them?

Accepted Answer

The decree names several resources that can be measured and issued through provincial supply systems: silver, wheat, wine, oil, and salt. For silver, a ceiling is stated: up to one hundred talents. For wheat, wine, and oil, ceilings are also stated: up to one hundred measures/baths each (the passage uses measures for wheat and baths for liquids). Salt stands out because it is supplied “without prescribing how much,” which is the only item not tied to a numerical cap in the text.

Question 3

How does verse 23 broaden or reinforce what is said in verses 21–22?

Accepted Answer

Verses 21–22 focus on the treasurers’ compliance with Ezra’s requests and provide concrete limits for several supplies. Verse 23 restates the matter more generally: whatever the God of heaven commands for the temple (“the house”) must be done exactly. That shifts from “do what Ezra asks” to “do what God requires for the temple,” implying the king sees Ezra’s mission as aligned with temple obligations. It also strengthens the tone: accuracy (“exactly”) is emphasized, not minimal compliance.

Question 4

What motive does the king give for exact compliance, and what possibilities does the wording allow?

Accepted Answer

The motive given is to avoid “wrath” coming against the king’s realm and his sons. The wording allows at least two plausible senses. It may refer to divine displeasure: the king wants to avert the God of heaven’s anger by supporting the temple properly. It may also include political fallout: in an imperial setting, neglected local worship could be associated with unrest, bad omens, or destabilizing consequences. The text itself does not define the mechanism, but it clearly links careful support of the temple with safeguarding the empire’s interests.

Question 5

Who receives tax exemption in verse 24, and what kinds of charges are excluded?

Accepted Answer

The exemption covers a wide range of temple personnel: priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers/porters, Nethinim, and other servants of the house of God. The decree states it is “not lawful” to impose “tribute, custom, or toll” on them. Even if the precise distinctions among these terms are debated, the combined effect is clear: standard forms of taxation or fees that could be levied on people and goods are not to be collected from those engaged in temple service. The policy protects their ability to function without normal financial burdens.

Question 6

How do Ezra’s titles in verse 21 function within the decree’s logic?

Accepted Answer

Ezra is not introduced merely by name; he is called “the priest” and “the scribe of the law of the God of heaven.” Within an imperial letter, titles establish both identity and authorized scope. “Priest” ties him to the temple’s cultic life, while “scribe of the law” ties him to instruction and regulation connected to that worship. Together, these titles help explain why treasurers should treat his requisitions as officially meaningful and why the king can connect compliance to what the God of heaven “commands” for the temple.

Question 7

What does the exemption and provisioning together suggest about the king’s policy toward the Jerusalem temple in this passage?

Accepted Answer

Taken together, the provisions show more than symbolic goodwill. The king orders real material support (with defined ceilings and prompt compliance) and removes financial obstacles for the workforce that sustains temple operations. The policy also aims at administrative stability: the order is sent to the relevant financial officials, and the stated reason includes protecting the realm and the royal line. Even without deciding how “religious” the king’s personal motivations are, the text presents the temple as an institution the empire is willing to fund and protect for broader governance interests.
