17:15Meaning
Sarai is renamed Sarah God addresses Abraham and gives a direct instruction about what Abraham is to call his wife. The old name “Sarai” is to be set aside; from now on she is to be called “Sarah.” The change is presented as God’s decision, not Abraham’s preference.
Unit 2 (v. 16a): God’s promised blessing is directed to Sarah
God states that he will bless her. The focus lands on Sarah herself, not only on Abraham, making her a direct recipient of God’s promised good.
Unit 3 (v. 16b): A son will come through Sarah
God adds a specific outcome to the blessing: Abraham will be given “a son by her.” The wording points to Sarah as the mother and connects the promised child to this particular marriage.
Unit 4 (v. 16c–d): The promise widens to nations and kings
God repeats the blessing for emphasis and then describes long-range results: Sarah will become a “mother of nations,” and “kings of peoples” will come from her. The logic moves from name change, to blessing, to one son, to a broad future line of descendants with political significance.
