A night struggle and a sudden injury Jacob is “left alone,” and a “man” wrestles with him through the night until daybreak. When the man sees he is not prevailing in the contest, he touches Jacob’s hip area, and Jacob’s hip is put out of joint (or badly strained) while the struggle continues.
Refusing release, requesting blessing, receiving a new name As dawn approaches, the man asks to be let go. Jacob refuses unless he is blessed. The man asks Jacob’s name, and when Jacob answers, the man announces a change: Jacob will no longer be called Jacob but Israel, because Jacob has fought with God and with men and has prevailed.
A withheld name, a granted blessing, and a named place Jacob asks for the man’s name, but the man responds by questioning why Jacob asks. The text then says the man blesses Jacob there. Jacob names the place Peniel, explaining that he has seen God “face to face” and yet his life was preserved.
Literary Context
This scene comes at the tense turning point of Jacob’s return home, just before meeting Esau again.
