Verse by Verse
Jacob sends Joseph to check on the brothers Joseph’s brothers are away with the flocks at Shechem. Jacob addresses Joseph and proposes sending him to them; Joseph replies with readiness (“Here I am”). Jacob’s mission is specific: check whether things are okay with the brothers and with the flock, then return with news. Joseph leaves from the Hebron valley region and arrives at Shechem, following the instructions as given.
Joseph cannot find them and asks for help At Shechem Joseph does not immediately locate his brothers and ends up roaming in the open country. A man finds him in this state and initiates conversation with a direct question: what is Joseph looking for? Joseph answers plainly that he is seeking his brothers and asks where they are pasturing.
The man redirects Joseph to Dothan The man reports that the brothers have moved on from that area, adding that he heard them say they were going to Dothan. Acting on this information, Joseph continues his search, follows after them, and succeeds in finding them at Dothan.
Literary Context
This scene sits inside the larger Joseph story, where family tensions are already in view and the plot is moving toward conflict between Joseph and his brothers. The passage functions like a setup: it explains why Joseph ends up alone on the road, away from home protection, and why the meeting with his brothers happens at a particular place. It also slows the pace with travel details and a brief encounter with a stranger, creating a clear chain of events that leads directly into the next episode when Joseph reaches his brothers.
Historical Context

The passage also stresses mobility and uncertainty in a herding life: the target group moves, and finding them requires asking someone who has heard their plans.
How to read the “certain man.” Some readers take the man as simply a random local who happens to have useful information. Others think the story is hinting at an unusual guide—someone whose timely appearance and knowledge make Joseph’s arrival at Dothan feel guided rather than accidental.
How to read Jacob’s concern. Many read Jacob’s instructions as practical oversight: he wants a status update on safety and livestock conditions. Others hear an added relational layer: given existing family tension in the chapter, the “report back” can also sound like monitoring a strained situation.
The passage gives no backstory for the man and offers only what he says (“I heard them say…”). It also does not explain Jacob’s motive beyond the stated mission. Because the narrator stays sparse, readers differ on how much weight to put on timing, on what “well” implies, and on whether the scene quietly signals a larger guiding hand behind normal events.
The text provides the concrete pathway into the next episode: Joseph is sent, he searches, he is redirected, and he finds the brothers at Dothan. It also reinforces themes already present in the Joseph story: family relationships are under strain, and key turns in the plot can hinge on small, realistic details (a move to a new pasture; a brief conversation with a stranger). Genesis 37:12 anchors the brothers at Shechem, and Genesis 37:17 lands Joseph at Dothan, showing how the story moves him from home oversight into exposure and conflict.
