Seeing Joseph, plotting murder, and staging a cover story Joseph’s brothers see him while he is still far away and decide in advance to kill him (Genesis 37:18). They identify him with contempt as “this dreamer” (Genesis 37:19). Their proposed plan is direct: kill him, throw him into one of the pits, then report that a wild animal devoured him, and finally ridicule the idea that his dreams will amount to anything (Genesis 37:20).
Reuben’s intervention and hidden motive Reuben hears the murder plan and acts to get Joseph out of their hands, urging them not to take his life (Genesis 37:21). He pushes an alternative: no bloodshed and no direct attack, but throw Joseph into “this pit” in the wilderness and do not lay a hand on him. The narrator adds Reuben’s intention—he planned to deliver Joseph later and return him to his father ().
Literary Context
This scene continues the Joseph story’s family conflict. Just before this, Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers’ welfare, and Joseph sets out obediently, eventually finding them away from where they were expected (37:12–17). The brothers’ resentment has been building through Joseph’s favored status and his dreams about future prominence (37:3–11). These verses are the first physical attack, moving the tension from hostile words to violence. The narrative also introduces an internal brake on the group through Reuben, setting up further turns in what the brothers will finally do.
Historical Context
The passage reflects a world of extended family herding groups moving seasonally in Canaan, where brothers might be far from home with flocks and limited oversight. Remote terrain included natural or cut cisterns used for water storage; when dry, such pits could function as temporary holding places and could be deadly if someone was left inside. Group honor and rivalry within a household could shape decisions, especially when a father’s favoritism elevated one son above others. The plan to blame a wild animal fits a setting where predators were a recognized danger to shepherding life.
Theological Significance
Genesis 37:18–24 shows a planned act of violence, not a sudden outburst. The brothers see Joseph coming, agree ahead of time to kill him, and already have a cover story ready (“a wild animal devoured him”). Their contempt is tied to Joseph’s dreams: they call him “this dreamer” and speak as if killing him will end the dreams’ future.

The narrator then gives Reuben’s motive: he intended to rescue Joseph later and restore him to their father. The brothers still assault Joseph by stripping his special coat and throwing him into an empty, dry pit—dangerous confinement even without immediate bloodshed.
Two main questions tend to vary in interpretation:
How effective or sincere Reuben is. Some read Reuben as genuinely protective but limited in authority; he can redirect the group but not stop the attack. Others read him as trying to protect himself as well as Joseph—choosing a plan that looks cooperative while keeping a private rescue plan. Both readings agree the text presents him as the one who prevents immediate murder.
What the “wild animal” plan implies. Some take it as a full scheme to fabricate evidence (not just words) for Jacob. Others read it as a verbal cover story at this stage, with the details of deception to be worked out later. The passage itself clearly reports the planned message; it does not spell out how they would prove it.
Why the disagreement exists The narrator supplies Reuben’s hidden intention (“that he might deliver him…to restore him to his father”), which points toward sincere rescue, but it does not describe Reuben’s inner conflicts or how much control he has over the others. Likewise, the brothers’ line about the wild animal reports their intended explanation, but the text does not describe preparations beyond the plan itself.
What this passage clearly contributes The passage intensifies the Joseph story from jealousy and speech into attempted murder and physical humiliation. It also introduces a key theme in the narrative: human choices are morally charged and conflicted—group cruelty, partial restraint, and calculated deception—setting up how Joseph’s path forward will come through a chain of decisions rather than a single moment. It also highlights the symbolism of the coat: the brothers remove the visible sign of Jacob’s favor before removing Joseph from their sight.
