Joseph closes the distance and names the wound Joseph invites his brothers to come closer, reducing fear and formality. Once they approach, he identifies himself plainly: “I am Joseph, your brother.” He ties that identity to the specific offense that still hangs over them—“whom you sold into Egypt”—bringing the truth into the open rather than pretending it did not happen.
He redirects their emotional response by re-describing the event Joseph tells them not to be overwhelmed by grief or self-directed anger about selling him. Without erasing what they did (“you sold me here”), he offers a second description running alongside theirs: “God sent me before you.” The aim of that sending is practical and urgent—“to preserve life”—so the past is interpreted in light of present survival.

Literary Context
This scene comes at the turning point of the Joseph story, after Joseph has tested his brothers’ honesty and their willingness to protect Benjamin. Judah’s appeal for Benjamin (45:1–3 just before this unit) triggers Joseph’s emotional reveal and shift from concealment to reconciliation. Verses 4–7 form Joseph’s first explanation of the past: he does not deny their agency (“you sold me”) but places it inside a larger survival-oriented account (“God sent me before you”). The logic moves from intimate identification, to emotional guidance, to concrete reasons grounded in the famine’s duration.
Historical Context
The passage assumes a world where family groups depended on seasonal farming and were highly vulnerable to multi-year crop failure. A prolonged famine would threaten food supplies, social stability, and the ability to plant and harvest in future years. It also assumes Egypt’s role as a regional power with administrative capacity to store and distribute grain, making it a place where outsiders might survive by buying food. Joseph’s position in Egypt implies integration into a royal bureaucracy that could relocate and provision a family during crisis, turning forced migration into a strategy for preserving a clan.
