God’s role and Joseph’s status Joseph tells his brothers that, in the end, God is the one who sent him to Egypt, not them. He points to concrete outcomes: he has become like a trusted adviser to Pharaoh (“a father”), in charge over Pharaoh’s household, and a ruler over the whole land.
Urgent message and relocation plan Joseph orders them to hurry to Jacob with a quoted message: Joseph has been made lord over Egypt, so Jacob must come down quickly and not delay. Joseph specifies where they will live—Goshen—so they can be near him, including children, grandchildren, flocks, herds, and everything they own. He promises ongoing support there.

Literary Context
This section comes right after Joseph reveals his identity to the brothers and begins the family reconciliation scene (Genesis 45). The logic moves from explanation to action: Joseph first reframes the past (“not you … but God”) and then turns immediately to practical steps to secure the family’s future. His message has a reporting core (“tell my father”) and a relocation plan (“come down,” “dwell in Goshen,” “I will nourish you”). The passage also strengthens credibility by appealing to what the brothers and Benjamin can directly see and hear.
Historical Context
The setting is Egypt during a severe, multi-year food crisis that has drawn people from surrounding regions to buy grain. Joseph functions as a top administrator under Pharaoh, able to assign land and organize large-scale resettlement. Moving Jacob’s household would mean relocating an extended family group with dependents and livestock, not merely a few individuals. “Goshen” is presented as a suitable region for herds and for keeping the family close to Joseph’s administrative center, while still remaining a distinct community within Egypt.

Genesis 45:8–13 presents Joseph interpreting his life in Egypt through God’s direction. He tells his brothers that God, not the brothers, is the decisive reason he ended up in Egypt (v.8). First, “not you … but God” (v.8). Some read Joseph as mainly emphasizing God’s purpose without denying the brothers’ real wrongdoing and choice. Others hear a stronger contrast: Joseph practically removes their agency from the explanation, focusing almost entirely on God’s action.
Second, “a father to Pharaoh” and “all my glory” (vv.8, 13). Some take “father” as an official role like chief adviser or patron, and “glory” as public honor and authority. Others think the wording is more relational and expansive, including wealth, prestige, and the whole public proof of Joseph’s reversal from slavery to prominence.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses strong either/or language (“not you … but God”) while also coming in a reconciliation scene where moral responsibility has been in view earlier in the story. Also, the key titles (“father,” “glory”) are broad enough to cover several overlapping ideas—status, counsel, wealth, and honor—so readers weigh the options differently.
What this passage clearly contributes This unit contributes a clear picture of God’s direction being compatible with real historical events: famine, political power, relocation, and survival. Explicitly, it shows Joseph attributing his rise to God, and using that rise to preserve Jacob’s household through a planned move to Goshen and sustained food support for years to come.
