Question 1

In verse 13, what reasons does God give for the coming “end of all flesh,” and who is held responsible?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 gives both a verdict and a reason. God says “the end of all flesh has come before me,” indicating the situation has reached a limit in God’s assessment. The stated reason is moral and social: “the earth is filled with violence through them.” The phrase “through them” points responsibility back to the human community rather than to creation itself. The verse then connects judgment to the earth as well: God will “destroy them with the earth,” tying human violence to a ruin that affects the land/world they inhabit.

Question 2

What is the relationship between “them” and “the earth” in the statement, “I will destroy them with the earth” (v.13)?

Accepted Answer

The sentence targets “them” as the direct object—those responsible for the violence—while also stating that the destruction involves “the earth.” At minimum, the passage presents judgment as reaching beyond individuals to the world they have filled with violence. It does not portray a private punishment only; it is a catastrophic event affecting the broader environment. Whether one hears “with the earth” as the earth being ruined alongside them or as destruction happening in/through the earth, the text’s emphasis is that the coming act is sweeping and world-impacting, not narrowly localized to a few people.

Question 3

List the ark’s construction details in vv.14–16. What do these details suggest about the ark’s purpose?

Accepted Answer

The instructions include: build an ark from gopher wood; make internal “rooms”; seal it inside and outside with pitch (v.14). God gives dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, 30 cubits high (v.15). Further features include a roof with a “cubit” finish upward, a door on the side, and three levels (lower, second, third) (v.16). Together these sound like a large, sealed, multi-deck vessel designed for occupancy and storage over a period of dangerous waters, functioning as an emergency refuge rather than a small boat for travel.

Question 4

In v.17, what does God say about agency (“who brings” the flood) and purpose (“why it comes”)?

Accepted Answer

God explicitly claims agency: “I, even, I do bring the flood of waters on this earth.” The flood is not described as random weather or impersonal nature; it is presented as a deliberate act initiated by God. The stated purpose is also explicit: “to destroy all flesh having the breath of life from under the sky.” The verse then restates the result in a comprehensive form: “Everything that is in the earth will die.” These lines portray the flood as a targeted response aimed at ending breath-bearing land life, not merely as property damage or a partial reset.

Question 5

What do the phrases “all flesh,” “breath of life,” and “under the sky” indicate about the scope of the flood in v.17?

Accepted Answer

The wording is intentionally broad. “All flesh” is reinforced by “everything… will die,” which sounds total within the category being described. The qualifying phrase “having the breath of life” and the location phrase “from under the sky” point toward land-dwelling, air-breathing creatures (humans and land animals) rather than defining the fate of sea life in this verse. The passage’s emphasis is the comprehensiveness of death among breath-bearing life on the land/world in view. Debates about global versus more limited geography arise later, but v.17 itself stresses an extensive, near-total outcome.

Question 6

What changes in tone and content at the start of v.18 (“But I will establish my covenant with you”)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 turns from verdict and destruction to preservation and commitment. The “But” sets a contrast: although the flood will wipe out “all flesh” with breath of life, God will “establish my covenant” with Noah. In this verse, the covenant is immediately tied to rescue and continuity: Noah is told he will come into the ark, and the protected group is specified as his close family—Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. So the covenant promise here is not abstract; it is connected to a concrete plan for survival through the coming catastrophe.

Question 7

How does the passage combine moral evaluation (violence) with practical instruction (measurements, pitch, levels), and what effect does that have on the narrative?

Accepted Answer

The passage moves from a moral diagnosis and verdict (violence filling the earth; the end has come) to detailed engineering instructions (materials, sealing, dimensions, door, decks). This combination makes the narrative read as both moral history and concrete preparation. It frames the flood as a purposeful response to corruption while also presenting survival as something planned, built, and organized under divine direction. The effect is to show that the coming event is not merely announced; it is managed through a specific, feasible set of steps centered on the ark as the means by which Noah’s household will be preserved.
