The reason given is that the earth is filled with violence “through them,” pointing to human responsibility for the situation. Genesis presents these events in the ancient world imagined by Israel’s earliest stories, long before Israel’s later kingdoms and empires. Flood stories were known across the wider ancient Near East, where communities lived near major rivers and faced seasonal flooding, and where oral and written traditions preserved memories of catastrophic waters. The text itself is less interested in naming a king or dating an era than in describing a societal breakdown marked by violence and a household-level construction project large enough to function as an emergency refuge. Genesis 6:13–18 presents God’s stated assessment of the world, God’s planned response, and God’s stated provision for Noah. Explicitly, God says the “end of all flesh” has come, links that end to the earth being filled with violence “through them,” and announces an intention to destroy “them with the earth” (v.13). God then gives practical instructions for building an ark: material, internal rooms, sealing with pitch, dimensions, a roof, a side door, and three levels (vv.14–16). God also states that God is bringing a flood to destroy “all flesh” that has “the breath of life” under the sky; “everything that is in the earth will die” (v.17). Two main questions tend to come up from the wording.
First, what “the end of all flesh” and “all flesh… under the sky” covers. Some readers take it as total destruction of all land animals and humans (as the phrases “all flesh” and “everything… will die” sound comprehensive). Others argue the expressions can be used broadly without specifying every living thing on the globe, and they focus on the passage’s repeated emphasis on the inhabited world known to the story.
Second, what it means that God will destroy “them with the earth” (v.13). Some read this as humans being destroyed and the ground itself being ruined in the process (judgment reaching the environment). Others hear it more as “from the earth” or “along with the earth,” highlighting that the catastrophe is earth-wide in impact without claiming the planet is annihilated.
Why the disagreement exists The disagreement exists because the passage uses sweeping phrases (“all flesh,” “everything”) while also using terms like “earth” that can refer either to the whole world or to the land/region in view. Also, the text states the scope in moral and narrative terms (violence everywhere; life with “breath” under the sky) rather than giving a scientific or geographical description.
What this passage clearly contributes This passage clearly links widespread violence with a decisive divine verdict (v.13) and presents the flood as an intentional act by God (v.17), not an accident. It also shows judgment and preservation side by side: God announces comprehensive destruction of breath-bearing land life, while simultaneously detailing an engineered means of survival and naming a protected household (vv.14–18). Finally, it introduces “covenant” before the flood has even happened, presenting rescue not merely as an escape plan but as the start of an ongoing relationship and commitment between God and Noah (v.18).
