Question 1

What is the stated purpose for bringing animals into the ark in verses 19–20?

Accepted Answer

Verses 19–20 explicitly state the purpose twice: the animals are brought into the ark “to keep them alive” with Noah. The focus is not on collecting animals as possessions but on preserving life through the coming flood. The repeated phrase ties the instruction to the larger narrative context of impending destruction and a provided means of survival. It also frames the animal-loading instructions as part of a coherent plan: creatures are included so that life continues alongside Noah rather than ending in the flood.

Question 2

What details are given about the number and sex of the animals to be brought (v. 19)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 specifies “two of every sort” and then clarifies the pair as “male and female.” The text’s explicit claim is a matched set, not simply two random animals. The male–female description naturally supports the idea of continued life after the flood, but the verse itself emphasizes the immediate goal: keeping them alive with Noah during the crisis. The verse also uses broad wording (“every living thing of all flesh”), then the next verse names representative categories.

Question 3

Which animal categories are named in verse 20, and how are they described?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 lists birds, cattle, and “every creeping thing of the ground.” Each is said to be “after their kind,” and each category is included in the instruction to preserve life. The naming functions like examples that unpack the broader phrase from verse 19 (“every living thing of all flesh”). The categories cover major land-animal groupings in a world where people recognized animals by observable types and roles (flying creatures, herd animals, small ground-moving creatures).

Question 4

How does the phrase “two of every sort shall come to you” contribute to the sense of how the plan works (v. 20)?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “shall come to you” adds a directional element: the animals are described as coming toward Noah rather than Noah only chasing them down. At minimum, it indicates that Noah will not be left without the animals needed for preservation; their arrival is part of the plan’s success. The text does not spell out the mechanism (whether this is extraordinary guidance, ordinary gathering, or both). What it clearly communicates is that the needed pairs will be present with Noah for the stated purpose: keeping them alive.

Question 5

What is Noah told to gather in verse 21, and who is it for?

Accepted Answer

Noah is told to take “all food that is eaten” and to gather it as stored supplies. The verse explicitly states two recipients: “for you, and for them,” meaning Noah’s human household and the animals on the ark. This makes the ark’s function more than simple flotation; it is a stocked refuge designed for an extended period. The instruction also implies practical forethought: survival requires enough edible provisions, stored and managed, for multiple kinds of creatures.

Question 6

How does verse 22 summarize Noah’s response to the commands, and what is emphasized by the repetition?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 gives a concise report: “Thus Noah did. According to all that God commanded him, so he did.” The repetition emphasizes completeness and exactness—Noah’s actions match the scope of God’s instructions (“all that God commanded”). It functions as a narrative seal on the preceding commands: the instructions are not left hanging; they are carried out. Within the flood story, this summary also sets Noah apart as responsive and reliable in contrast to the corrupt setting described earlier in the chapter.

Question 7

What repeated words or ideas in verses 19–21 highlight the scope of the instructions?

Accepted Answer

Across verses 19–21, the language of comprehensiveness stands out: “every,” “all,” “two,” and the repeated purpose “to keep them alive.” The repetition of “two of every sort” and “after their kind” reinforces that the instruction is not selective or narrow within the named categories. The “all food that is eaten” instruction similarly widens the scope to provisioning, not only animal intake. Together, these repeated terms create a sense of a complete, orderly plan aimed at sustaining life through the flood.
