3:1Meaning
A prayer-song identified The verse labels the section as a “prayer” belonging to Habakkuk and identifies him as “the prophet.” It also indicates the piece is arranged for musical performance (“set to victorious music”), preparing the reader to hear what follows as public worship language, not private notes or argument.
Unit 2 (v. 2a): Awe based on reported reputation
Habakkuk addresses Yahweh by name and says he has “heard of” God’s fame. The response is reverent fear and wonder: he is “in awe” of God’s deeds. The logic is: what Habakkuk knows about God’s past actions becomes the foundation for what he is about to ask.
Unit 3 (v. 2b–c): Urgent request for renewal and visibility
Habakkuk asks God to “renew your work” and repeats the time phrase “in the midst of the years,” pressing for action within the present stretch of history, not only in a distant future. He also asks God to “make it known,” meaning that God’s activity should become evident and recognized, not hidden or merely hoped for.
Unit 4 (v. 2d): Mercy requested alongside anger
The prayer anticipates that God’s renewed work may come with “wrath,” a term for God’s anger expressed in action. Habakkuk therefore adds a balancing plea: when acting in anger, God should still “remember mercy,” treating compassion as something God can bring to mind and apply in the moment.
