Israel’s rescue and preservation through a prophet
The focus shifts from the ancestor to the people: Yahweh “brought Israel up out of Egypt” through a prophet, and “by a prophet” Israel was preserved. The verse credits both the initial escape and the ongoing safeguarding to Yahweh’s action, mediated through prophetic leadership. It highlights that Israel’s existence was not self-made but sustained through guided deliverance.
Unit 3 (vv. 12–13 together): A paired memory with a moral edge
Placed side-by-side, the two memories connect personal origins (Jacob) and national origins (exodus). Both emphasize need, external danger, and provision rather than achievement. The repeated “for a wife” and “by a prophet” underline how much Israel’s story depends on factors beyond its control—relationships and guidance given along the way.
