A second difference concerns “love them freely.” Some read “freely” as stressing that God’s love is not purchased or forced; it is given voluntarily. Others add that “freely” also implies God’s love is not fragile or easily withdrawn, because it is grounded in God’s own choice.

Also, the line shifts from “them” to “him,” which can be heard either as Israel viewed as one people (a single “person”) or as a representative figure.
