The community’s response “in that day” The passage then imagines what people will say at the time of fulfillment: “Behold, this is our God.” They interpret the outcome as the arrival of the one they “waited for,” and they describe him as the one who “will save us.” The repetition (“this is Yahweh; we have waited for him”) intensifies recognition and relief, leading to a shared emotional result: “we will be glad and rejoice.”
Literary Context
These lines sit within a larger song of praise that follows earlier oracles about God bringing down oppressive powers and protecting the vulnerable (Isaiah 24–25). The movement in chapter 25 builds from celebrating God’s strength and justice (25:1–5), to an image of a lavish feast for “all peoples” and the removal of what blocks or darkens life (25:6–7), and then to the climax in 25:8 with the ending of death and grief. Verse 9 answers that climax with a spoken response “in that day,” turning divine action into a communal confession and celebration.
Historical Context
Isaiah’s preaching addressed Judah during the late eighth century BC, when Assyria dominated the region and smaller kingdoms faced invasion, tribute demands, and political instability. War, displacement, and public humiliation were real experiences, so “reproach” and “tears” fit the social world of threatened communities. Prophetic poetry often describes international upheaval and future reversal using sweeping, world-wide language, even when spoken into a local crisis. The divine name “Yahweh” and the title “Lord Yahweh” underline that Israel’s God, not imperial rulers, is portrayed as directing the final outcome.
Theological Significance
Isaiah 25:8–9 presents a sweeping reversal of what humans fear and suffer. The text explicitly says God will end “death” permanently, remove visible grief (“wipe away tears from off all faces”), and take away the “reproach” attached to his people “from off all the earth.” These are public, not merely private, changes.

It also explicitly portrays a communal response “in that day”: people recognize Yahweh as “our God,” identify his arrival as the fulfillment of long waiting, and describe the outcome as “salvation,” expressed with shared joy.
What “death” means. Some read “death” as literal human death being ended, full stop. Others read it as including literal death but also speaking more broadly of national ruin and the death-like power of oppression, especially in a prophetic poem addressed to a threatened people.
How wide “all faces / all the earth” is. Some take the phrases as globally universal in a straightforward sense. Others take them as intentionally expansive poetry that stresses totality and public visibility, even if spoken first into a particular people’s crisis.
Who “his people” and the speakers in v.9 are. Some read “his people” primarily as Israel/Judah and the speakers as that restored community. Others see the language of public, earth-wide reversal as opening outward to a larger gathered group, while still anchored in Israel’s story.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses large, absolute language (“forever,” “all faces,” “all the earth”) inside prophetic poetry. Poetry communicates real claims, but it can compress time, broaden scope, and blend national and human realities in a single picture. That creates honest questions about whether the words are meant most literally, most symbolically, or both.
What this passage clearly contributes The text contributes a strong claim about God’s final ability to undo the deepest human losses: death and grief are not treated as permanent masters. It also links God’s act to public vindication (“reproach” removed), and it frames the right response as recognition (“this is our God”), long expectation (“we have waited”), and naming the outcome as “salvation” (deliverance) rather than mere relief. The closing reason clause (“for Yahweh has spoken it”) grounds the hope in God’s declared commitment, not in circumstances.
