A feast for all peoples on “this mountain” The passage begins with a location (“in this mountain”) and a host (“Yahweh of Hosts”). The action is that he “will make” a feast, and the guest list is expansive: “to all peoples.” The menu is described with repeated phrases for rich, fatty foods and aged, refined wines, emphasizing quality, abundance, and delight rather than bare survival.
The removal of a universal covering In the same location (“in this mountain”), Yahweh acts again, this time not by serving but by destroying/removing. What he removes is pictured as a “covering” and a “veil” that lies over and is spread across all peoples and all nations. The wording suggests something shared and widespread that blocks, weighs down, or obscures—now taken away by Yahweh’s decisive intervention.
Literary Context
These verses sit within a larger song-like section celebrating Yahweh’s decisive action over powerful forces and his provision for the vulnerable (Isaiah 24–27). Immediately before, the speaker praises Yahweh for bringing down an oppressive city and becoming a refuge for the poor (25:1–5). Verses 6–7 then shift to a public, world-embracing image: a banquet for the nations and the removal of a universal “covering.” The next lines continue this trajectory by describing the end of death and the wiping away of tears (25:8), keeping the focus on a broad reversal of human distress.
Historical Context
Isaiah’s ministry addressed Judah in a time when empires pressed smaller kingdoms through warfare, tribute, and forced alliances. Assyria’s expansion reshaped the region, destabilizing borders and bringing repeated threats to Jerusalem and its neighbors. In that setting, “mountain” language naturally evokes Zion/Jerusalem as a political and religious center, yet the language here reaches beyond local interests by repeatedly saying “all peoples” and “all nations.” The picture of a host-king providing a grand feast and removing a burden fits ancient royal imagery, now applied to Yahweh’s rule over international realities.

In the same place, Yahweh also removes something described as a “covering” and a “veil” that lies over everyone. The text does not explain what the veil is in these two verses, but it does describe its reach (universal) and Yahweh’s action (he destroys/removes it).
What “this mountain” refers to. Some read it as Zion/Jerusalem in a fairly direct way, since “mountain” language often points there in Isaiah and the wider setting is Judah’s world. Others think Zion is the starting point but the phrase functions more like an idealized stage for God’s worldwide rule, not only a geographic location.
Whether the feast is literal, symbolic, or both. Some understand an actual future banquet scene is envisioned. Others read the feast primarily as an image for God’s generous provision and restored life for the nations, whether or not a literal meal is intended.
What the veil/covering is. Interpreters propose different referents: a shared grief or sorrow, a kind of darkness or ignorance that blinds peoples, oppressive conditions that “cover” human life, or mortality itself. The next verse’s focus on death and tears (25:8) often influences this question, but 25:6–7 by itself stays at the level of image.
The language is highly pictorial (“feast,” “covering,” “veil”) and the passage does not define its images in place. Also, Isaiah repeatedly uses Zion imagery while simultaneously expanding the horizon to the nations, creating an intentional tension between a specific center (“this mountain”) and an explicitly global scope (“all peoples”).
These verses portray Yahweh’s rule as publicly generous and internationally wide: he hosts “all” and he acts on a problem shared by “all.” Explicitly, the text claims (1) Yahweh prepares lavish abundance for the nations and (2) Yahweh removes a universal barrier/burden/obscuring layer. Theological inference commonly drawn from that is that God’s end goal is not narrow isolation but a worldwide reversal from lack and obscured life into shared joy and clarity—anchored on “this mountain” as the scene of his decisive action.
