Unit 1 (v. 16a): Yahweh names the target and the core issue
Yahweh speaks and identifies “the daughters of Zion” as the focus. The stated reason is that they are “haughty,” meaning they carry themselves as elevated and superior.
Unit 2 (v. 16b–d): Pride shown through posture, gaze, and movement
Their pride is pictured in an “outstretched neck,” suggestive of an intentionally proud stance, and “wanton eyes,” suggesting a look meant to attract attention. They “walk and mince,” moving in a self-conscious, stylized way, and their steps make “tinkling” sounds, implying ornaments worn on the feet.
Unit 3 (v. 17a): The announced reversal—affliction instead of beauty
Because of this, the Lord will “strike with a scab” the crown of their head. The effect is that what would normally be part of their carefully managed appearance (their head and hair) becomes marked by an ugly, visible condition.
Unit 4 (v. 17b): The deeper humiliation—exposure instead of display
Yahweh will “lay bare their secret parts,” language of forced exposure. The idea is not merely discomfort but disgrace: the ones who sought attention through controlled display will be publicly uncovered in a way they did not choose.
