46:3Meaning
A call to listen, and a reminder of lifelong support God addresses “the house of Jacob” and “the remnant of the house of Israel,” calling them to pay attention. He identifies them as people who have been “borne” and “carried” from their earliest beginnings—described with the close-up images of “from birth” and “from the womb.” The point is not merely that God helped once, but that his relationship to them has been sustaining and continuous.
Unit 2 (v. 4a): The promise extends into old age
God then pushes the timeline forward: even when they reach “old age” and “gray hairs,” he says “I am he,” meaning he remains the same one who has been present throughout. Human caregivers may not last forever, but God declares ongoing involvement as time and weakness increase.
Unit 3 (v. 4b): Four linked commitments: made, bear, carry, deliver
The verse ends with a stacked set of promises. God says he “made” them, and therefore will “bear” them; he repeats “I will carry,” and adds “I will deliver.” The chain argues from origin to outcome: the one responsible for their beginning also takes responsibility for their continued preservation and ultimate rescue.
