Listen, come, and live under an enduring promise The speaker stacks simple commands: turn your ear, come, hear. The promised result is “your soul shall live,” presenting listening as the pathway into renewed life. Then the speaker promises to “make an everlasting covenant with you,” described as “the sure mercies of David”—dependable kindness tied to David’s story and promises.

These verses sit inside Isaiah 55’s broad invitation to receive what God offers without payment (55:1–2) and to respond by listening and coming (55:3). The logic moves from “hear and live” to “I will bind myself to you with an enduring covenant,” then anchors that promise in a recognizable public figure tied to David (55:3–4). Verse 5 extends the horizon outward: the covenant promise is pictured as drawing in nations beyond the audience’s previous experience. The chapter continues by calling for turning back to God and trusting that God’s word will accomplish its purpose (55:6–11).
Historical Context
Isaiah 55 belongs to the later part of Isaiah that speaks hope to a community facing displacement and loss, looking toward restoration and a renewed future. The reference to “David” evokes Judah’s older royal story and its public leadership ideals at a time when that leadership had been broken or absent. Talk of “peoples” and “nations” reflects a world where small communities lived under the shadow of large imperial systems and shifting alliances. Others read “him” as a future David-like ruler, so the covenant’s reliability is tied to an expected public leader from David’s line. Others read “him” as Israel (or Zion) spoken of in a representative, singular way, so the community becomes the witness and leader to the peoples.
A related question is who the “you” is in v.5. Some take it as the whole restored community calling nations; others take it as the representative leader calling nations, with the people sharing in that widened influence.
The pronouns shift quickly (“you… him… you”) without naming the referent, and the David reference can point backward (to David’s past) or forward (to a renewed Davidic role). Also, the words for “nation” and “peoples” can mean one political entity or many groups, leaving open whether the picture is diplomatic, migratory, or worship-related.
This text presents God’s covenant promise as durable (“everlasting”) and trustworthy (“sure” kindness linked to David), not as a short-lived offer (explicit). It portrays God’s work as creating public credibility—witness, leadership, and recognized standing among other peoples (explicit). It also grounds international interest in Israel not in Israel’s prior strength but “because of Yahweh… for he has glorified you” (explicit). Any further identification of the leader (David, a future ruler, or the community as a representative figure) is a theological inference that must account for the pronouns and the David anchor in v.3–4.
