Question 1

In verse 18, what two actions does Jeremiah attribute to Yahweh, and what do they imply about how Jeremiah learned of the plot?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 contains two linked claims: Jeremiah says Yahweh “gave me knowledge of it” and then “showed me their doings.” The first highlights that Jeremiah’s awareness did not come from rumor or guesswork but from divine disclosure. The second adds that what was revealed concerned concrete human actions—what “they” were doing—so the threat is presented as real and intentional. Together, these statements frame the plot as hidden from Jeremiah until Yahweh made it known and as something Yahweh can expose even when others keep it secret.

Question 2

How does the “gentle lamb led to the slaughter” image in verse 19 shape the reader’s understanding of Jeremiah’s situation?

Accepted Answer

The “gentle lamb” image emphasizes Jeremiah’s initial innocence and lack of awareness: he says he “didn’t know” they had planned schemes against him. It also communicates vulnerability—being led to slaughter suggests he is being carried toward danger by others’ actions, not by his own aggression. The simile sets an emotional tone of shock and helplessness while underscoring that the plot is not a minor inconvenience; it is aimed at death or destruction. The image therefore interprets his experience as sudden, undeserved threat.

Question 3

List the goals of the plot in verse 19 and explain how they escalate from one another.

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 expresses three escalating aims. First, “destroy the tree with its fruit” depicts ruin of the whole person and what comes from him (life and impact). Second, “cut him off from the land of the living” states the endpoint plainly: removal from life, likely death. Third, “that his name may be no more remembered” goes beyond killing to social erasure—ending legacy, reputation, and future influence. The progression moves from destruction, to death, to the removal of memory, showing the plotters want complete elimination, not merely silence for a moment.

Question 4

What does verse 20 say Yahweh is like as a judge, and what does it mean that he “tries the heart and the mind”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 portrays Yahweh of Hosts as one who “judge[s] righteously,” meaning he can be trusted to make right assessments and decisions. The added line about trying “the heart and the mind” says his evaluation reaches inward, beyond public appearances, to motives, intentions, and inner planning. In this context, that matters because the plot is hidden and deceptive: human courts might miss it or misread it, but Yahweh can assess the plotters’ true intent and Jeremiah’s integrity. The verse grounds Jeremiah’s appeal in God’s ability to see inside people.

Question 5

In verse 20, what does Jeremiah expect to happen, and what does he do with his “cause”?

Accepted Answer

Jeremiah expects to “see” Yahweh’s vengeance on the plotters, which implies a future act of divine response that will make the truth visible—his case will be publicly or tangibly resolved, not left ambiguous. At the same time, he says, “to you have I revealed my cause,” meaning he has laid open his dispute or case before Yahweh rather than settling it himself in the passage. The combination shows expectation plus entrusting: he anticipates action from God and locates the decision with the righteous judge who knows inner motives.

Question 6

What does the passage suggest about the relationship between Jeremiah’s public message and the personal danger he faces?

Accepted Answer

Although these verses do not repeat Jeremiah’s preaching, they sit inside a chapter about covenant unfaithfulness and coming trouble, and they show backlash moving toward the messenger. The plot aims to cut him off and erase his name, suggesting opponents view his continued speaking as a threat. The passage therefore implies that Jeremiah’s role as a prophet is not merely unpopular; it provokes organized resistance and attempts to end his influence permanently. The text links divine revelation (v.18) and divine judgment (v.20) with the real-world costs of prophetic confrontation.
