Question 1

What do the men of Anathoth want Jeremiah to stop doing, and what reason do they give?

Accepted Answer

They demand that Jeremiah stop prophesying “in the name of Yahweh.” Their threat implies that Jeremiah’s continued speaking is the trigger for their violence: if he keeps doing it, he will die “by our hand.” The text does not spell out their motives beyond that, but it shows the method: coercion through a direct death threat. They are not simply disagreeing with him; they are attempting to silence him by force. The passage frames this as a rejection of Jeremiah’s prophetic role and a challenge to the public delivery of Yahweh’s message.

Question 2

How does the passage identify the attackers, and why is that identification significant in context?

Accepted Answer

The attackers are identified as “the men of Anathoth.” In the larger setting of Jeremiah, Anathoth is associated with Jeremiah’s own locality, making the threat feel close-to-home rather than coming only from distant political enemies. Within this unit, the identification also turns a hidden danger into a named one: Yahweh speaks “concerning” them, exposing who is behind the threat. The significance in the passage is that the verdict is not vague; it is directed at a specific group who are described as seeking Jeremiah’s life.

Question 3

List the punishments named in verses 22–23. What pattern do you notice in how they are described?

Accepted Answer

The punishments are: young men will die by the sword; their sons and daughters will die by famine; and there will be “no remnant” to them when the calamity comes in the “year of their visitation.” The pattern is concrete and communal. It targets both fighting-age strength (“young men”) and the next generation (“sons and daughters”), and it uses common wartime outcomes (sword, famine). The final statement intensifies the picture by describing the outcome as total, presenting the disaster as comprehensive rather than limited.

Question 4

What is the stated reason Yahweh gives for bringing this calamity on them?

Accepted Answer

The passage connects the calamity to their actions toward Jeremiah: they “seek your life,” they order him not to prophesy in Yahweh’s name, and they threaten to kill him if he continues. Yahweh then says, “I will punish them” and “I will bring evil (calamity) on the men of Anathoth.” While the text does not offer a long explanation, the sequence itself supplies the logic: their attempt to silence a prophet through murder brings a divine verdict. The reason is therefore grounded in their violent opposition to Yahweh’s speaking through Jeremiah.

Question 5

What does the phrase “Yahweh of hosts” add to the tone or force of the verdict in verse 22?

Accepted Answer

Calling God “Yahweh of hosts” heightens the authority and weight behind the announced punishment. In plain terms, it signals Yahweh as a commanding power with resources to carry out what he declares, which fits the wartime imagery that follows (sword and famine). Within the passage’s logic, the men of Anathoth claim power over Jeremiah’s life (“by our hand”), but the title reinforces that the final authority over life, judgment, and historical events belongs to Yahweh. It strengthens the contrast between human threats and the divine capacity to act.

Question 6

How does verse 23 develop the idea of timing, and what does that imply about how the judgment is presented?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 adds that the calamity will come in “the year of their visitation,” which frames the judgment as scheduled rather than random. The wording implies an appointed time when their case is dealt with, not merely an immediate reaction in the moment. This also helps explain the passage’s certainty: the verdict is announced as something that will arrive when that “year” comes. Even if the exact historical moment is not named, the text presents the coming disaster as deliberate and timed, fitting Jeremiah’s broader message that national crises are not meaningless accidents.

Question 7

What does “no remnant to them” mean within the argument of this short unit, even before debating how literal it is?

Accepted Answer

Within the unit’s argument, “no remnant to them” functions as an escalation: it intensifies the punishment beyond the earlier details of sword and famine. It signals that the outcome will not be a small setback but a decisive, sweeping undoing of the group being judged. Even before deciding whether it must mean absolutely zero survivors, the phrase clearly communicates severity and finality. The men of Anathoth attempt to end Jeremiah’s voice; the verdict responds with a portrayal of their own future being cut off, including the loss of the community’s strength and continuation.
