1. Who is “he” in v. 13? Some read “he” as a specific human leader (the conquering king). Others read it as the invading army as a whole. Others take it as the disaster personified (the oncoming catastrophe described like a storm).

2. What does “for me” mean in v. 12? Some take it to mean God actively sends the destructive force as an instrument of judgment. Others think it means the disaster serves God’s announced plan (God is not surprised by it and will use it), without specifying how God relates to the invader’s agency.

3. What kind of “washing” is in v. 14? Some hear ritual language in the metaphor (like washing to remove impurity) used to press for moral change. Others see it as a purely moral image with no ritual background needed. Either way, the point in the verse is clearly internal (“heart,” “thoughts”), not surface-level repair.

Why the disagreement exists The passage shifts voices and uses compressed imagery. It does not name the invader here, and it speaks in poetic pictures (wind, storm clouds, whirlwind) that can point either to a commander, an army, or calamity treated as a “he.” Likewise, “for me” is brief and can be read as either direct sending or purposeful allowance. The “wash your heart” line borrows everyday and possibly worship-related language, which naturally leads to different emphases.

What this passage clearly contributes

• Judgment is portrayed as overwhelming and unmanageable, like a wind too strong to be used for constructive work.
