Question 1

In verse 1, what exactly is the search trying to find, and what outcome is attached to finding it?

Accepted Answer

The search is not for general religiosity or public respectability but for a person who “does justly” and “seeks truth.” Those two traits combine public fairness (how one treats others) with inner and verbal honesty (what one is committed to and speaks). The outcome attached to finding such a person is surprising: God says, “I will pardon her,” meaning the city (Jerusalem) would be spared. The passage’s logic is that the city’s crisis is not treated as inevitable; it is tied to the absence of even minimal, representative integrity.

Question 2

How does verse 2 develop the accusation, and why is the oath phrase important?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 contrasts a familiar religious formula—“As Yahweh lives”—with the claim that the people “swear falsely.” The phrase matters because it is orthodox-sounding and publicly recognizable as loyal speech. Yet the text insists that invoking God’s name can be used to cover dishonesty rather than guarantee truth. This deepens the critique from private wrongdoing to corrupted public speech. The problem is not merely that people fail sometimes, but that their words about God and their commitment to truth no longer match.

Question 3

According to verse 3, what does God look for, and what has been the people’s response to being “stricken” and “consumed”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 states that God’s eyes “look on truth,” indicating that the divine concern is straightforward honesty and faithfulness, not appearances. The people have experienced hardship described as being “stricken” and “consumed,” but the text says they were “not grieved” and “refused to receive correction.” The response is portrayed as deliberate: they “made their faces harder than a rock” and “refused to return.” In the passage’s argument, suffering or pressure alone does not produce change when people reject correction.

Question 4

What assumptions does Jeremiah make in verses 4–5 about the “poor” and the “great men,” and what does he discover?

Accepted Answer

Jeremiah initially assumes the “poor” act wrongly because they are “foolish” in the sense of uninformed: they “don’t know the way of Yahweh” or “the law of their God.” He then expects the “great men” to be different because they “know” that way and that law. His discovery is the opposite of what he hoped: the leaders also reject restraint, and they do so “with one accord,” breaking the “yoke” and bursting the “bonds.” The passage uses this to show that the failure is comprehensive, not only educational or economic.

Question 5

What do the images of “yoke” and “bonds” imply about how the leaders view God’s way and law?

Accepted Answer

The “yoke” and “bonds” images portray God’s restraint as something they experience as limiting and burdensome, like constraints placed on an animal or captive. By “breaking” and “bursting” them, the leaders are not pictured as making a small mistake but as rejecting the idea that they should be answerable at all. In context, this follows the claim that they “know” God’s way, so the imagery implies willful refusal rather than ignorance. The language frames their stance as a conscious throwing off of moral accountability.

Question 6

In verse 6, what is the relationship between the predator imagery and the stated reason for judgment?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 uses predators (lion, wolf, leopard) to depict sudden, unavoidable danger threatening people who move outside the city. Whether read as a picture of an invading force or as generalized violent collapse, the imagery communicates stalking, tearing, and loss of safety. The text then gives an explicit reason: “their transgressions are many” and their “backsliding is increased.” So the danger is not presented as random; it is connected to persistent and escalating rebellion. The verse ties moral breakdown to the approach of destructive consequences.
