The verse then adds a further charge: even after Yahweh had satisfied their needs (“fed them to the full”), they responded with adultery and organized visits—“in troops”—to prostitutes’ houses.
A vivid image of uncontrolled desire The people are compared to well-fed horses running loose. The point is not weakness from deprivation, but desire intensified by plenty and lack of restraint. The image ends with each person pursuing “his neighbor’s wife,” portraying adultery as widespread and socially destructive.

Literary Context
Jeremiah 5 is part of a long accusation section where the prophet describes Judah’s public life as corrupt and unresponsive, from street-level behavior to leadership failure. The chapter presses the question of whether any honest, truth-seeking person can be found, and it portrays the society as refusing correction. Verses 7–9 function as a concentrated example of why forgiveness is not being granted: it is not a single lapse but a settled pattern. The repeated questions drive the logic toward inevitable accountability rather than negotiation.
Historical Context
Jeremiah speaks in Judah’s final decades before Babylon’s takeover (late 7th to early 6th century BC), when political pressure, shifting alliances, and social instability were high. Public religion commonly blended loyalty to Yahweh with devotion to other deities and local cult practices. Wealth and food security for some groups existed alongside exploitation and moral breakdown, and reform efforts did not produce lasting change. Within that setting, Jeremiah’s message frames national collapse as connected to long-term, widespread betrayal and social decay rather than a sudden misfortune.
Theological Significance
The passage presents Yahweh speaking as a wronged covenant partner who asks why forgiveness is even thinkable in this situation. The stated reasons are not small mistakes but a pattern: abandoning Yahweh, pledging loyalty to “no-gods,” and then acting out that disloyalty through public sexual unfaithfulness. Some readers take “adultery” mainly as literal sexual sin being condemned in its own right (with the “neighbor’s wife” line pushing strongly in that direction). Others think the sexual language is also meant to picture religious betrayal (since the same verses mention swearing by “no-gods”), so that literal immorality and disloyal worship are being condemned together.
There is also some uncertainty around a phrase in v. 7. Many translations read it as Yahweh providing abundant food (“fed them to the full”). Some interpreters argue the Hebrew could instead mean something like binding them by oath. Either way, the point is similar: Yahweh had given them covenant care and commitment, yet they responded with betrayal.
Jeremiah often mixes marital/sexual imagery with language about worship and covenant loyalty across the book, which makes it hard to decide when “adultery” is only literal or also metaphorical. In addition, the Hebrew wording behind “fed them to the full” is debated, and “visit” in v. 9 can mean inspection, punishment, or both depending on context.

Mercy is not pictured as automatic; it is being refused in the face of continued disloyalty and social corruption.
