The question of understanding the ruin The text asks who is wise enough to understand and explain why the land has “perished” and been burned into a wilderness where nobody travels. It frames the answer as something that comes from Yahweh’s own speech, not merely human guesswork.
Yahweh’s stated reason Yahweh says the reason is relational and practical: they abandoned the “law” set before them, refused to obey Yahweh’s voice, and did not live by it. Instead, they followed the stubborn direction of their own hearts and pursued “the Baals,” a pattern reinforced by what their fathers taught them.
Bitter provision as consequence Because of their chosen path, Yahweh of Hosts announces he will “feed” the people with wormwood and give them water of gall. The point is not nourishment but an experience of bitterness and harm replacing ordinary provision.
Literary Context
This unit comes in a lament-heavy stretch where the prophet grieves over widespread breakdown in the community and the resulting collapse of normal life. The passage functions like an official explanation inside the lament: the devastation is not treated as mysterious chance but as something that can be “declared” because Yahweh speaks about its cause. It also shifts from description to announcement, moving from “why has this happened?” to “therefore this will happen,” setting up later lines where judgment imagery and national scattering continue to appear across Jeremiah.
Historical Context
Jeremiah speaks in Judah’s last decades as pressures from large empires rise and the kingdom’s independence fades. War, siege, and forced migrations were real outcomes in this period, leaving fields damaged, travel unsafe, and towns emptied. The passage assumes a society where worship was contested and mixed, with ongoing attraction to multiple deities (“the Baals”) alongside claims of loyalty to Yahweh. The language about scattering “among the nations” fits the wider experience of deportations and refugees that accompanied Babylon’s campaigns in the early 500s BC.
Theological Significance
The passage treats the devastation of the land as something that can be explained, not as random disaster. The text frames the “why” as requiring insight tied to Yahweh’s own speech (v.12), then gives Yahweh’s stated reason: the people abandoned the instruction Yahweh placed before them, refused his voice, and did not live by it (v.13).

The result described is not only loss of land and safety but a reversal of normal provision: what Yahweh “feeds” and “gives” is bitterness and harm (v.15). Finally, the judgment includes scattering among unfamiliar nations and continuing danger pictured as a pursuing sword (v.16).
How broad “the land” is. Some read “the land” as the whole territory of Judah in general, emphasizing national collapse. Others hear it as a more immediate description of particular regions already devastated, used as a representative picture of what is happening to Judah.
How literal the imagery is. “Burned up like a wilderness,” “wormwood,” and “water of gall” can be read as mainly poetic language for severe suffering, or as poetic language that still points to concrete experiences (famine conditions, contaminated water, siege misery, or the bitter realities of exile).
How final “consumed” is. “Until I have consumed them” can sound like total destruction. Others take it as “until the judgment has fully run its course,” meaning massive loss and ongoing lethal threat without claiming that every individual must die.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses strong picture-language to describe historical judgment. Since prophetic speech often compresses events and uses metaphor for lived realities, readers differ on how directly each image maps onto a specific event (famine, siege, deportation) and how absolute the end-point language should be taken.
