Question 1

Who is summoned in vv. 17–18, and what are they expected to do?

Accepted Answer

The text says Yahweh commands that “mourning women” be called, along with “skillful women” (v. 17). Their skill suggests trained leadership in public lament, not simply spontaneous crying. They must come quickly and “take up a wailing for us” (v. 18), leading a kind of communal grief that spreads to everyone (“our eyes…our eyelids”). The point is urgency and scale: the lament is meant to match the magnitude of the disaster approaching Zion, and the community participates in what the professionals initiate.

Question 2

What does v. 19 identify as the content of the lament heard from Zion?

Accepted Answer

The wailing voice from Zion speaks in first-person plural: “How are we ruined!” and “we are greatly confounded” (v. 19). The lament includes both shock and shame. It then gives two explanatory lines introduced by “because”: “we have forsaken the land” and “they have cast down our dwellings.” Whatever the precise nuance, the lament is not vague; it names national collapse in terms of loss of place (land) and loss of stability (homes overthrown).

Question 3

In vv. 17–18, why does the passage emphasize haste and overflowing tears?

Accepted Answer

The repeated push for speed (“make haste”) and the image of tears flowing freely (“gush out with waters”) communicate that the grief is not premature or restrained (vv. 17–18). The community is being summoned to respond as if the catastrophe is already arriving. That emotional intensity also functions as interpretation: if the proper response is overwhelming lament, then the situation is being portrayed as severe, unavoidable, and larger than ordinary sorrow. The language prepares the reader for the reasons given in v. 19 and the harsh images in vv. 21–22.

Question 4

What change happens in v. 20 when the speech turns directly to women, and what are they told to do?

Accepted Answer

In v. 20 the address narrows: “hear the word of Yahweh, you women.” The women are told to receive Yahweh’s word and then “teach your daughters wailing” and teach “everyone her neighbor lamentation.” The focus shifts from bringing in specialists (vv. 17–18) to spreading the practice through everyday relationships and across generations. The passage presents lament as something learned and transmitted, implying that the coming disaster will be so formative that it must be given language and passed on within the community.

Question 5

How does v. 21 portray the reach of ‘death,’ and what groups are named?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 personifies death as an intruder: it “is come up into our windows” and “entered into our palaces.” Windows and palaces together suggest both ordinary and elite spaces are penetrated. The result is described as cutting off “the children from outside” and “the young men from the streets.” That pairing highlights breadth—different ages and the normal public spaces of life are affected. The verse does not specify a single mechanism (war, disease, famine), but it clearly depicts death’s reach as total across social levels and daily routines.

Question 6

What is the effect of the images in v. 22 about unburied bodies, and how do they relate to the rest of the unit?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 moves from mourning to aftermath: bodies fall “as dung on the open field” and like leftover “handful” after harvest, with “none” to gather them. The imagery communicates both the number of dead and the breakdown of basic social and religious practices like burial. This intensifies earlier statements: Zion’s ruin is not only emotional (tears, wailing) but also tangible and public (fields littered with corpses). It completes the unit’s movement from summoned lament (vv. 17–18) to explained ruin (v. 19) to death saturating the city (v. 21).

Question 7

Who might ‘they’ be in “they have cast down our dwellings” (v. 19), and what does the text require you to conclude?

Accepted Answer

The line “they have cast down our dwellings” (v. 19) leaves the agent unnamed. It could refer to invading forces who destroy homes, or more generally to hostile powers bringing devastation. The passage itself does not identify the group, so it does not require a specific historical actor to be named here. What it does require is the conclusion that the people experience the destruction as something done to them, resulting in displacement and loss of housing. The anonymity can also heighten the sense of overwhelming, unstoppable ruin.
