Summon the mourners and begin the wailing Yahweh commands the people to think carefully and to call in “mourning women,” especially those known to be skilled. The goal is urgent, organized lament: they are to hurry and raise a wail “for us” until tears flow freely.

Professional mourning was a known practice in the ancient Near East, where skilled women could lead communal grief at funerals or national tragedies. Jeremiah addresses Judah in the last decades before Jerusalem’s fall, when threats from imperial powers and internal instability made invasion, siege, and displacement realistic fears. The language of homes thrown down and people leaving the land fits wartime devastation and forced movement. The imagery of death entering windows and palaces reflects how violence and disease in siege conditions could reach every social level, from ordinary houses to elite residences.

Both readings keep the same core point: the grief should match the reality of what is arriving (vv. 17–18).
There is also some difference over what “death” represents in v. 21. Some hear it mainly as war’s violence (invaders reaching every home), while others think it includes siege disease and famine, with “death” personified as entering through windows. Either way, the picture communicates that no social space is protected.
Finally, v. 19 can be read with slightly different emphasis: “we have forsaken the land” may describe forced displacement (flight/exile) or may also echo covenant unfaithfulness (abandoning what God gave). The verse itself stresses the experienced outcome—loss of land and homes—while the broader book often links those outcomes to unfaithfulness.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses compressed poetry and personification (“death” climbing in), which can point to more than one concrete referent without specifying only one. It also mixes direct command, reported sound (“a voice of wailing is heard”), and oracle, making it hard to tell how much is staged rhetoric versus a literal procedural plan.
