9:23Meaning
Yahweh rejects three standard bragging rights Yahweh speaks directly and forbids boasting based on being wise, strong, or rich. The point is not that these things never exist or never matter, but that they are not acceptable foundations for self-celebration or ultimate security.
Unit 2 (v. 24a): The only permitted “boast” is knowing Yahweh
The passage replaces forbidden boasting with a single permitted kind: boasting in having understanding and knowing Yahweh. “Understanding” here is tied to the next clause; it is not abstract cleverness but insight shaped by who Yahweh is.
Unit 3 (v. 24b–c): Knowing Yahweh means recognizing how he acts in the world
Yahweh identifies himself as the one who actively practices loyal love, justice, and righteousness “in the earth.” The knowledge being commended is recognition of this public pattern—what Yahweh does and promotes in real human society.
Unit 4 (v. 24d): Yahweh’s stated pleasure
Yahweh ends by saying he delights in these things. This grounds the command in Yahweh’s own values: the “boast” that fits is the one that aligns with what he enjoys seeing displayed on earth.
